New York Mets Dominated On June 1 Following Pre-Game Festivities

The New York Mets fell flat as the tea, retired a team legends number.

Following a pre-game ceremony where the New York Mets raised Darryl Strawberry’s No. 18 to the rafters, the team did not give the fans at Citi Field much else to cheer for on Saturday afternoon. The Mets were defeated by the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-5. Strawberry looked back on his time fondly as the Mets retired the number of one of the best players in team history.

“Little did I know that I would come to the greatest place to play baseball. Little did I know I would play in front of the greatest fans forever. There was nothing like playing in Queens. There was nothing like playing in Shea Stadium. The memories I hold will be forever. I will always cherish them.”

Strawberry was a member of the 1986 New York Mets team that won the World Series. The team has not won a world championship since. How will the New York Mets rebound from a tough loss on Saturday?

Mets Pitching Staff Hampered Team In Defeat

The Mets(24-34) pitching staff has struggled all season and that was the case as well at home on Saturday. Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea had a rough day on the mound. He surrendered five earned runs over 5.1 innings of work. One silver lining was that he mustered a season-high 10 strikeouts in the game. Relief Pitcher Josh Walker relieved Mannea and did not fare well against the Diamondbacks lineup. He surrendered four earned runs over only 2.1 innings.

New York’s offense fought back in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring four runs in the frame, but the pitching staff dug their offense too deep of a hole this afternoon. First Baseman Pete Alonso had an RBI for the second game this series as he went 2-of-4 with a two-run home run in the ninth inning. The New York Mets amassed more hits than their opponent, 12-11, but were hampered by their pitching staff.

The Arizona Diamondbacks(26-32) have not had a strong offense this year, but a series with the New York Mets was exactly what the doctor ordered. In game two of this four-game series on Friday, Arizona was defeated 10-9 by the Mets and 3-2 in the opening game on Friday. Arizona’s offense was led today by Center Fielder Corbin Carroll and First Baseman Christian Walker. Carroll drove in two runs while Walker had four RBI with a grand slam to get the scoring started in the top of the first frame. Walker is now top 15 in the league with 38 RBI.

The New York Mets have the final game of their series against Arizona on Sunday afternoon before they head on the road to the “Nation’s Capital” for a three-game series against the Washington Nationals. It has been a miserable season for the Mets, as seemingly nothing has gone right for the ballclub.

Arizona has also struggled to follow up a National League pennant last season as they are fourth in the National League West. Arizona heads home tomorrow to prepare for a three-game series with the divisional-rival San Francisco Giants beginning on Monday.
