Tonight’s game started as well as the New York Mets could have asked for against the Philadelphia Phillies. Starting Pitcher Luis Severino struck out four straight Phillies hitters to begin the game and Catcher Mark Vientos and First Baseman Pete Alonso hit back-to-back home runs to help NY take an early 2-0 lead. New York’s lead was short-lived as Phillies Shortstop Trea Turner tied the game up with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning.
The runs continued coming fast and furious this evening as New York Mets Center Fielder Brandon Nimmo gave NY a 4-2 lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third. Philadelphia’s Brandon Marsh responded with an RBI single in the top of the fourth to cut the Mets’ lead in half. The bottom of the fourth inning changed the trajectory of this game for the New York Mets. They scored five runs in the half inning thanks to a three-run home run by Francisco Alvarez, an RBI double from Brandon Nimmo, and an RBI single from Vientos. Will New York be able to carry this momentum into tomorrow’s game?
New York Offense On Tremendous Streak
The New York Mets have won four consecutive games, but their offense has been sensational over the last three games. New York scored 10 runs in the final two games of their series against the Washington Nationals and 10 runs tonight. They have scored 30 runs in their last three games. This is the first time in franchise history the New York Mets have scored 10+ runs in three consecutive games. With the MLB Playoffs right around the corner, this offensive explosion could not be coming at a better time.
New York’s Bullpen Hangs On For Dear Life
This game was much closer than it should have been due to the New York Mets bullpen having a rough day at the office. New York pulled Severino after he surrendered two earned runs over six innings and punched out seven. Relief Pitcher Danny Young had a night he would like to forget. He only recorded one out and surrendered three earned runs. Relief Pitchers Reed Garrett, Ryne Stanek, and Closer Edwin Diaz combined to toss 2.2 scoreless innings and secure the victory this evening.
Looking Forward To Tomorrow’s Game
The second game of this four-game set will pit Philadelphia’s Christopher Sanchez(10-9, 3.24 ERA) against New York Mets Starting Pitcher David Peterson (9-2, 2.85 ERA). Sanchez is 13th in the league in ERA and dominated the New York Mets when he faced them last week. He surrendered one earned run over seven innings of work and punched out seven. Sanchez faced the New York Mets in May and fared well during that start as well. He surrendered three earned runs over 5.2 innings of work.
Peterson has also had a tremendous 2024 season. He would be fourth in the league in ERA if he had enough starts to qualify. Peterson dominated the Phillies on Sunday tossing 7.2 innings and surrendering one earned run. Tomorrow evening will be his second time facing Philadelphia this season, and he will look to build upon last week’s stellar start. If both starting pitchers can pitch to their potential on Friday night, runs will be hard to come by in Flushing Meadows.
