New York Mets and New York Yankees Both Stifled By Dodgers Pitching

Both the New York Mets and New York Yankees have been unable to hit Dodgers pitching.

Both the New York Mets and the New York Yankees have run into the same problem during the 2024 MLB Playoffs. That issue is the pitching staff of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The New York Mets struggled with RISP against Los Angeles in the NLCS, and the Yankees have run into the same issue in the first two games of the World Series. The Mets went an anemic 11-0f-57 with RISP during the NLCS. This lack of clutch hitting, in addition to a historic performance by LA’s offense, sunk New York’s chances of making it to the 2024 “Fall Classic.”

The Yankees, down 0-2 in the World Series, have been hampered by their ability to come up with timely hits. New York is 2-of-14 with RISP over the first two games of the World Series. Will the New York Yankees be able to crack the code of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitching, unlike the New York Mets?

New York Mets Provided Rivals With Blueprint

If the New York Yankees were watching the NLCS closely, which they almost assuredly were, they would have seen that not pouncing on the pitching staff of the Los Angeles Dodgers would lead to trouble. LA’s pitching staff, while pitching well, will give the opposing team opportunities to score runs. It is then up to the opposing offense to take advantage. A prime example of this took place last night in Game 2 of the World Series. The Yankees had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth inning and came up empty-handed. Stranding the bases loaded was something the New York Mets did countless times in the NLCS, including twice in Game 6.

The recipe for the New York Yankees to storm back in the World Series is the same as it was for the New York Mets a few weeks ago. The high-profile players must produce to emerge victorious. Both of the New York teams have accumulated hits during their series, but have struggled to get those runners to cross the plate. New York Mets First Baseman Pete Alonso and Shortstop Francisco Lindor combined for six RBI in the NLCS. New York Yankees Right Fielder Juan Soto is 3-of-7 with an RBI in the World Series while Designated Hitter Giancarlo Stanton is 2-of-9 with three RBI.

The gaping hole in the New York Yankees offense has been Center Fielder Aaron Judge. He has been miserable during the 2024 MLB Playoffs and has not fared better in the first two games of the World Series. He is 1-of-9 with a whopping six strikeouts. New York needs Judge to perform closer to his MVP form than one of the worst hitters in the league for New York to stage a comeback.

Final Thoughts

The New York Yankees are running into the same issues that doomed their rivals against the Los Angeles Dodgers. If the Yankees are unable to drive in runners the World Series will be a short one, and both New York teams will be sent packing by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
