New York Mets Mark Vientos Looks To Build On 2024 Postseason

New York Mets Third Baseman Mark Vientos had a great postseason.

With New York Mets fans gearing up for the World Series which begins tonight, the dust is beginning to settle on what was a tremendous 2024 season. The team had a red-hot final four months of the regular season and parlayed it into an NLCS berth against the Los Angeles Dodgers. New York lost in six games as Los Angeles was the better team over the series. For a New York Mets offense that struggled throughout much of the NLCS Third Baseman Mark Vientos was a bright spot during the 2024 MLB Playoffs. Vientos set a franchise record with 14 RBI during the postseason.

He surpassed John Olerud and Curtis who previously led the franchise with 12 RBI in a single postseason. Vientos hit .327 in the playoffs with five home runs and 14 RBI. At the time of publication, Vientos’ 14 RBI is the most in the postseason. Odds are he will not end the postseason as the RBI leader, but it does not overshadow how good he was over New York’s playoff run. Will the New York Mets be able to build around Vientos heading into what they hope is a prosperous future?

New York Mets Have Found a Gem In Vientos

This regular season was the first time in the career of Vientos that he was allowed to play on a full-time basis and he made the most of it. He played a few games in late April but was called up in mid-May and became the team’s everyday third baseman from that point onwards. He hit .266 this season with 27 home runs and 71 RBI. Vientos was 29th in the league in home runs during the regular season. He was also third on the New York Mets in home runs, second in Slugging Percentage, and third in OPS. Vientos was also sixth among third basemen this season with 3.2 WAR.

Vientos also had a few clutch moments that stood out this season. He had two walk-off home runs during the regular season. The first came on April 28 against the St. Louis Cardinals and the second was on September 6 against the Cincinnati Reds. One of the things Vientos will need to work on this offseason for him to reach his full potential is his fielding. He was a below-average fielder(-0.2 WAR) this season. Vientos, 24, has a bright future with the New York Mets but will need to become a better fielder.

Final Thoughts

During a 2024 season that felt like a fairytale at times for the New York Mets, Vientos solidified his spot as the team’s third baseman in 2025 and beyond. Brett Baty was looked at as New York’s future third baseman, but he will have to find a new position if he wants to remain with the New York Mets. Vientos is just one of a handful of players that will be roaming around Citi Field for years to come.
