New York Mets Lose 3-0; Playoff Series Set

The New York Mets lost Game 162 but will be heading to the MLB Playoffs.

The New York Mets dropped the final game of their regular season 3-0 to the Atlanta Braves. Even without facing Braves ace Chris Sale, who was scratched minutes before the second half of the doubleheader, the Mets struggled. New York had nothing to play for in the game, other than playoff seeding, as they clinched a playoff berth earlier in the day with a thrilling 8-7 win. The Atlanta Braves, on the other hand, had everything to play for in the second game of the doubleheader as they needed a win to make the 2024 MLB Playoffs.

New York Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza did not start Luis Severino as he was held out of this game with a playoff spot already locked up. Mendoza also rested Shortstop Francisco Lindor who has been battling back spasms and just returned to the diamond. With only nine total hits in the game, two swings of the bat made all the difference. Third Baseman Gio Urshela had an RBI single in the bottom of the second and Designated Hitter Marcell Ozuna had a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh. How will these ballclubs fare in the playoffs this year?

New York Mets Offense Goes Quiet

After such a back-and-forth Game One, the New York Mets offense had seemingly nothing left in the second game. The Mets did not get their first hit of the game until First Baseman Pete Alonso hit a single in the top of the fifth. In place of Sale, Atlanta turned to Grant Holmes who was up to the task. He tossed four scoreless and punched out seven. Atlanta used six pitchers, as they left nothing to chance, to win the game and clinch their seventh straight playoff appearance.

New York’s offense has been inconsistent over their past six games, which is not the best sign as they prepare for postseason baseball. They have been shutout twice over their last six games and scored only one run in another game. Their offense has also scored five or more runs in two of their last six games. The New York Mets will need consistency on offense to make some noise in the MLB Playoffs.

Mets Head Back To Familiar Territory

The New York Mets begin the Wild Card Round tomorrow on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers. New York just played a three-game set against the Brewers over the weekend and did not play their best. They lost two of three and are 1-5 against Milwaukee this season. If New York does not crack the Milwaukee Brewers code, their stay in the MLB Playoffs will be a short-lived one.

In the first two games of their series against Milwaukee, New York’s offense was awful. They went a combined 0-of-12 with RISP and were outscored 14-4. The New York Mets do not want a repeat of those two games as they seek to get off to a strong start in Milwaukee, Wisconsin tomorrow evening.
