New York Mets Get Important 3-Game Sweep Over Divisional Rivals

New York Mets Shortstop Francisco Lindor remains sidelined.

It has been a rough 2024 season for the New York Mets, but the team has been playing much better as of late. They finished off a three-game sweep on the road against the Washington Nationals earlier today and have won five of their last six games. This change of fortune for New York came as a shock since the Mets were coming off a stretch where they dropped 16 of 20 games. This losing streak included blunders galore including a relief pitcher bashing his employer in a post-game press conference.

A trip to the “Nation’s Capital” was exactly what the doctor ordered for the New York Mets. They outscored the Nationals 23-11 over the three-game set. The Mets dominated the Nationals 9-1 this afternoon behind eight great innings from Starting Pitcher Luis Severino. He tossed eight innings and surrendered one earned run while punching out four. Shortstop Francisco Lindor had a standout series with five hits and two RBI over the three games. Center Fielder Harrison Bader did the heavy lifting for the Mets offense this afternoon with three RBI.

Will the New York Mets be able to keep this momentum going into their next series?

New York Mets Season Summary

New York(27-35) is fourth in the National League East and only 3.5 GB of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. The Mets offense has been relatively good this season. They are 14th in batting average, seventh in home runs, and 13th in runs scored. Their offense is led by Right Fielder Starling Marte and First Baseman Pete Alonso. Marte leads the club with a .276 average while Alonso is tied for ninth in the league with 14 round-trippers.

The pitching staff of the New York Mets has been inconsistent this season. They are 20th in ERA, have surrendered the seventh-fewest home runs, and are third in the league in strikeouts. Relief Pitcher Reed Garrett leads the team with five wins. New York’s bullpen has been awful this season as they have six losses when holding a lead after eight innings. The Mets are also bottom ten in the league with only 14 saves this season.

The loss of New York Mets Closer Edwin Diaz has upended their bullpen. His last appearance on May 25 against the San Francisco Giants led to a shoulder injury and a stint on the 15-day injured list. The all-star closer is set to begin a rehab assignment with the Brooklyn Cyclones tomorrow. He hopes to return to the big leagues early next week.

Even when Diaz was healthy this season, he was far from effective this season. He only converted 5-of-9 saves and had a horrendous 5.40 ERA this season.

Mets Upcoming Schedule

The New York Mets take their show on the road as they travel to Europe to take part in the 2024 London Series beginning on Saturday. They will face one of the best teams in Major League Baseball, and their hated rival, the Philadelphia Phillies. This two-game set will take place at London Stadium.

New York will look to carry their momentum from improved play on the diamond in the past week and showcase their potential to a European crowd starved for Major League Baseball.
