The New York Mets saw their cushion in the National League Wild Card race cut in half tonight with a 5-1 loss on the road to the Atlanta Braves. New York is now only a game clear of the Atlanta Braves. New York Mets Starting Pitcher Luis Severino was not on his game this evening. He worked out of trouble in the bottom of the first inning but got roughed up in the bottom of the third inning and surrendered three runs. Center Fielder Michael Harris II got the scoring started with an RBI double. Second Baseman Ozzie Albies and Left Fielder Ramon Laureano both added RBI singles.
Harris III would tag Severino for a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Severino would surrender four earned runs over four innings of work. Relief Pitcher Ryne Stanek relieved Severino and did not fare much better. He surrendered a solo home run to DH Marcell Ozuna to give Atlanta a 5-0 lead. Mets Third Baseman Mark Vientos responded with a solo home run in the top of the seventh. New York would not score again though. Will the New York Mets be able to recover in time for tomorrow’s game?
New York Mets Offense Never Got Going
The New York Mets offense had a game tonight they would like to forget. They were shut down by Starting Pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach. He had the best start of his young career against New York earlier this season and picked up where he left off this evening. He surrendered his lone earned run to Vientos over seven strong innings. New York was only able to muster four hits this evening.
New York did not experience any more success against Relief Pitcher Joe Jimenez and star Closer Raisel Iglesias. New York’s offense has been the driving force behind the team shooting up the wild card standings over the last few months. Only three hitters in the Mets lineup had a hit this evening.
Looking Forward To Tomorrow’s Game
The second game of this three-game series will pit New York Mets Starting Pitcher David Peterson(9-3, 3.08 ERA) against Atlanta Braves Starting Pitcher Chris Sale(18-3, 2.38 ERA). Peterson struggled in his last start against the Philadelphia Phillies. He was roughed up surrendering four earned runs over 3.2 innings of work. Peterson has been stellar all season and will look to get back on track Wednesday night when his team needs him most.
Sale is the prohibitive favorite to win the NL Cy Young Award and has been spectacular this season. He is leading the league in wins, ERA, and strikeouts, and is sixth in WHIP. He faced the New York Mets back in July and fared well. Sale surrendered two earned runs over 7.1 innings and punched out nine. If both starting pitchers are at their best on Wednesday, runs will be hard to come by at Truist Park.
