The offense of the New York Mets got off to a sluggish start this evening, but their bats exploded in the bottom of the fourth inning. New York got the series sweep with a 10-0 drubbing of the Washington Nationals. This game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when New York scored a whopping nine runs in the half inning. Right Fielder Tyrone Taylor hit an RBI double to get the scoring started.
Mark Vientos, Luisangel Acuna, Starling Marte, and Brandon Nimmo all added to the offensive onslaught in the fourth inning. Nimmo hit his 20th home run of the year tonight, a three-run shot. He has 80 RBI for the first time in his career. New York did most of their damage in one half inning, but that was all they needed to win. Acuna added a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Will the New York Mets be able to carry this momentum into their next series?
New York Mets Stifle Nationals Offense
The Washington Nationals had no answer for New York Mets Starting Pitcher Jose Quintana. He tossed seven scoreless innings and lowered his ERA to 3.74 on the season. Quintana allowed only two hits in what was a masterful outing tonight. New York’s relievers tossed two scoreless innings to complete the shutout on Wednesday night. Relief Pitchers Phil Maton and Huascar Brazoban tossed two scoreless innings. Washington finished the game with only three hits.
Looking Ahead To Tomorrow’s Game
The New York Mets host the Philadelphia Phillies for a four-game series beginning tomorrow evening. Philadelphia sends Taijuan Walker(3-6, 6.29 ERA) to the mound opposed by Luis Severino(10-6, 3.77 ERA). Walker will have a chance to exact revenge on his former ballclub as he was a member of the New York Mets in 2021 and 2022. Walker’s last start was against the Mets, and he fared well. He tossed three scoreless innings. Walker has faced the New York Mets three times this season and has pitched well. He has surrendered three earned runs over 12 innings this year.
Severino has been a crucial part of New York’s pitching staff this season. His last start was also against the Phillies and he fared well. He surrendered three earned runs over six innings and walked away with a no-decision. Both starters look to build on the momentum they garnered in their last start. Both teams will be fighting for playoff positioning over these four games at Citi Field. New York will look to hang onto the third and final National League Wild Card spot.
