New York Mets pitching prospect Brandon Sproat is the fifth-ranked prospect in the farm system. A lot of fans are excited about his future and there is potential that he could be the ace for this team in the long haul. Sproat was recently pitching with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in Double-A, but he was promoted to the Syracuse Mets in Triple-A. There may be plans for him to be called up to the New York Mets at some point in 2024. He is not projected to be called up to the big leagues until the 2025 season.
They Should Not Rush His Development
The Mets should not rush Brandon Sproat’s development because it would be a mistake for them to do so. He is 23 years old and was a second-round pick (56th overall) in the 2023 MLB Draft. Sproat also pitched with the Brooklyn Cyclones in High-A earlier in the season. He has pitched in 17 games so far this season in the minor leagues and has started in 16 of them. His record is 6-2 with a 2.05 ERA. In 87.2 innings, Sproat has given up 51 hits and 21 runs. He has only walked 31 batters and has struck out 110 batters.
For those who think the New York Mets should put him in the bullpen, it would be a massive mistake for them to do so. They need him to develop as the future ace of the rotation. The Mets do not have a true ace at the top of the rotation. Kodia Senga will be a nice piece for them in the rotation moving forward, but Sproat could reach the potential of Jacob deGrom. A lot of fans are very high on him. It would be a mistake for David Stearns and Carlos Mendoza to put him in the bullpen.
The bullpen has struggled this year, but now is not the time to mess with his development. Brandon Sproat needs to continue developing as a starting pitcher with the Syracuse Mets in Triple-A. He should spend the rest of the season in Triple-A. Sproat should go into spring training in 2025 with a chance to compete for a spot in the starting rotation. It would be better for his development in the long run. Jose Quintana and Sean Manaea don’t appear to be the long-term answers in the rotation either for this franchise.
Other Top Prospects
The New York Mets have a very good farm system. Sproat is the number five ranked prospect in the system. He is the top pitching prospect for the Mets. To go along with him as the top pitching prospect, the other four prospects ranked ahead of him are position players. Jett Williams, who is an outfielder/shortstop, is the top-ranked prospect for New York. Outfielders Drew Gilbert (second-ranked) and Ryan Clifford (third-ranked) and shortstop/second-baseman/outfielder Luisangel Acuna are the fourth-ranked prospects in the Mets farm system.
None of those prospects will most likely be called up this year. It is very possible that Acuna could be in the major leagues by next season. However, it will be interesting to see what happens this offseason. First baseman Pete Alonso will need to be re-signed. They could choose not to re-sign him. Ever since the emergence of Mark Veintos at third base, Brett Baty has been working on his game in Triple-A. Ronny Mauricio will also be back from injury for the Mets next season. Bats will not be an issue for them moving forward. Brandon Sproat will need to become the ace for this team in the future and they will also need to address the position because pitching is very important in today’s MLB.
