The New York Mets started tonight’s game at Citi Field off with a bang. Second Baseman Jose Iglesias blasted a lead-off home run to help New York take an early 1-0 lead. Center Fielder Brandon Nimmo added an RBI groundout to give New York a 2-0 lead after one inning of play. Philadelphia Phillies Shortstop Edmundo Sosa responded with a Sac Fly to cut New York’s lead in half. New York Mets Starting Pitcher David Peterson did a nice job limiting the damage as he worked around a bases-loaded jam. His run was unearned due to a fielding error by Mets First Baseman Pete Alonso.
Phillies Right Fielder Nick Castellanos had an RBI double to knot this game up at 2 in the top of the third inning. The Philadelphia Phillies then broke the game open in the top of the fourth inning by scoring a whopping six runs. Philadelphia added two runs in the top of the sixth and two more in the eighth to walk away with a 12-2 victory. After scoring 10+ runs in three straight games for the first time in franchise history, the offense of the New York Mets had no answers tonight. New York only mustered four hits. Will New York be able to recover on Saturday?
New York Mets Let Hated Rival Clinch Playoff Berth
The New York Mets were unable to defeat the Phillies this evening and keep them out of the 2024 MLB Playoffs. Philadelphia has qualified for the postseason for the third consecutive season and is looking for their first World Series title since 2008. The team holds a commanding eight-game lead in the National League East and their “magic number” to clinch the division is down to one.
The Phillies have been one of the most consistent teams over the past few seasons. They advanced to the World Series in 2022 and the NLCS last year. Both the teams and their fans hope 2024 is the year where the ballclub can break their championship drought. The Philadelphia Phillies have been one of the league’s best teams this season and have the requisite pieces to be crowned champions in just over a month.
Looking Forward To Tomorrow’s Game
The third game of this four-game set will take place tomorrow afternoon and pit Philadelphia Phillies Starting Pitcher Ranger Suarez(12-7, 3.13 ERA) against New York’s Sean Manaea(11-5, 3.26 ERA). Suarez has faced the New York Mets twice this season and fared well in both starts. He has surrendered two earned runs over 10.2 innings of work. Suarez was one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball during the first half of the regular season but has struggled over the last few months.
Manaea has had a tremendous 2024 season. He is 16th in the league in ERA, 18th in strikeouts, and 10th in WHIP. He dazzled in his last start on Monday against the Washington Nationals. Manaea surrendered one earned run over seven innings of work. Philadelphia will look to keep the momentum going as the New York Mets look to rebound as they are still in the thick of the wild card race.
