The New York Mets begin a three-game series tomorrow night on the road against the Atlanta Braves which has the potential to make-or-break New York’s 2024 season. The Mets enter this critical series two games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card race. New York currently occupies the second wild card spot over the Arizona Diamondbacks due to a head-to-head tiebreaker.
New York has the inside track to make the 2024 MLB Playoffs over their divisional rivals. They have a 75.9% chance to make the playoffs according to FanGraphs while Atlanta only has a 41.2% chance. These ballclubs have been evenly matched this season as they are 5-5 against one another. How will the New York Mets fare in this series with their season hanging in the balance?
New York Mets Come In Riding High
New York(87-69) had a great weekend as they took three of four games at home against the Philadelphia Phillies. A combination of solid pitching and timely hitting led to a solid series for the New York Mets. Center Fielder Brandon Nimmo had a standout series with six RBI. Catcher Francisco Alvarez also had six RBI in the series against Philadelphia.
New York also made history by scoring 10+ runs in three straight games for the first time in franchise history. They did so in the final two games of their series against the Washington Nationals and in the first game against the Phillies. The New York Mets control their destiny over the final week of the 2024 regular season as they aim to make the postseason for the second time in the last three seasons.
Looking Forward To Tomorrow’s Game
The first game of the series will pit New York Mets Starting Pitcher Luis Severino(11-6, 3,79 ERA) against Atlanta Braves Starting Pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach. Severino has been one of New York’s best starting pitchers this season. He has experienced a degree of success in his two previous starts this season against the Braves. Severino surrendered four earned runs over 10 innings of work and struck out 10 in those two starts. He will need to be stellar once again for the Mets to increase their lead in the wild card race.
Schwellenbach has also pitched well in 2024 and had the best start of his career earlier this season against the New York Mets. Schwellenbach tossed seven scoreless innings and had a career-high 11 strikeouts at home on July 27. He wants an encore of that performance to help his team claw their way back into the playoff picture. Truist Park will be rocking and both teams have much to play for over this three-game series.
