After two days off due to the devastation of Hurricane Helene, the New York Mets are back on the diamond this evening on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers. New York has three games against one of the National League’s best teams before heading back to Atlanta for a doubleheader on Monday, September 29. The final two games of the Mets-Braves were postponed to Monday due to Hurricane Helene.
These ball cubs faced off earlier this season in Flushing Meadows and the Milwaukee Brewers swept the three-game series. The New York Mets were outscored 14-8 in that series. New York will look to not have a repeat this weekend with their season hanging in the balance. How will the New York Mets fare this weekend in Milwaukee in an extremely important series?
New York Mets Have Great Playoff Chances
Even though the New York Mets(87-70) have a high percentage chance of making the 2024 MLB Playoffs, it is not a guarantee. That is especially true with their five remaining games against two teams that have been great this season. Fortunately for New York, the Milwaukee Brewers are locked into the No. 3 seed in the National League. This means the team will be more focused on the MLB Playoffs than an inconsequential series to end the regular season. Milwaukee will look to finish the season with no hiccups while the New York Mets will be facing defacto playoff games in the final five games of the regular season.
New York has a 77.3% chance to make the MLB Playoffs according to FanGraphs. They are percentage points ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second National League Wild Card spot. The Mets are also only one game clear of the Atlanta Braves who are looking to overtake either the Mets or Braves in the final days of a season-long marathon. There are three teams fighting for two playoff spots, which will make this weekend very exciting.
Looking Forward To Tonight’s Game
The first game of this series will pit New York Mets Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea(12-5, 3.29 ERA) against Milwaukee Brewers Starting Pitcher Frankie Montas(7-11, 4.85 ERA). Manaea has been great this season as he is 14th in the league in ERA, 18th in strikeouts, and eighth in WHIP. He is coming off a solid start against the Philadelphia Phillies where he surrendered three earned runs over seven innings of work.
Montas is coming off one of his worst starts of the year on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He surrendered seven earned runs over only 2.2 innings. The New York Mets offense hopes to make it back-to-back poor starts for Montas. New York has their sights set on getting this series off to a strong start with a victory this evening.
