The New York Mets took care of business in the first game of yesterday’s doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves to punch their ticket to the 2024 MLB Playoffs. New York lost the second game yesterday which set them up to play the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Wild Card series beginning today. The first game begins at 5:30 PM at American Family Field. How will the New York Mets fare in this series?
New York Mets Face Familiar Team
New York, before they traveled to play the Atlanta Braves, faced the Milwaukee Brewers for three games on the road over the weekend. The Mets did not play their best as they dropped two of three games. Milwaukee has had New York’s number this season as they are 5-1 against them this year. A glaring weakness for the Mets during their first two games against the Brewers over the weekend was a sluggish offense.
The New York Mets went 0-of-12 with RISP over those two games and were outscored 14-4. New York’s offense has scored one run or fewer in three of their six matchups with Milwaukee this season. New York’s offense has to regroup quickly as they look to start this series well. No matter who wins this best-of-three series, this matchup has the opportunity to be poetic. The Brewers visited Citi Field to begin the 2024 regular season, and now one of these teams will get to end the other team’s season.
Looking Ahead To Game 1
The New York Mets send Luis Severino(11-7, 3.91 ERA) to the mound in Game 1. He will be opposed by Freddy Peralta(11-9, 3.68 ERA). Severino was scratched from the second game of the doubleheader Monday with the New York Mets having already locked up a playoff spot earlier in the day. He has been a stalwart in New York’s rotation this season and will look to get the team off to a strong start in this game. Severino faced Milwaukee in his first start of the season and did not fare well. He surrendered six runs(three earned) over five innings of work. Severino does not want a repeat of this performance this evening.
Peralta also had a strong regular season. He finished 11th in the league in strikeouts and led the club in ERA and strikeouts this year. He also faced the New York Mets in his first start of the year and dominated them. He surrendered one earned run over six innings of work and punched out eight. This should be an exciting series as both teams look to build upon stellar regular seasons.
