New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson was supposed to be the savior of the franchise. Instead, fans want him gone from the team. Last season, Wilson came in when Aaron Rodgers went down with an Achilles injury. It was a golden opportunity to show what he could do. The offense was terrible and it led to another disappointing season for the Jets. Amidst the trade discussions, Wilson was absent from voluntary workouts.
New York Jets QB Zach Wilson Absent From Workouts
It isn’t surprising that Zach Wilson is absent. The team has been vocal about being done with him. However, the team is having issues finding a team that will take him. GM Joe Douglas had this to say when asked about the situation.
“There’s just no news to report on that. I think it’s each player’s choice whether they’re going to be here for phase one (of the program). These are all voluntary. There are quite a few players that haven’t come for the first week. So, look, that’s a decision that Zach has to make.”
The New York Jets likely won’t get much for Zach Wilson. While he is a former second-overall pick, his play on the field hasn’t been great. In 34 games, he has thrown 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions. He has also taken a whopping 113 sacks. While some of this is on the offensive line, some of that is Wilson holding the ball too long.
New York Jets 2024 Outlook
It is now or never for the Jets. Aaron Rodgers isn’t getting any younger. The team has signed many other oft-injured veterans, hoping they can stay healthy in 2024. If there is some good news for the team, it is that the division looks vulnerable. While the Buffalo Bills are still the betting favorite, they lost many key pieces, including star receiver Stefon Diggs. Miami and New England have questions of their own as well.
Ultimately, it all comes down to the play of Rodgers. If the New York Jets are going to do anything in 2024, they need high-level quarterback play. They hoped Zach Wilson would provide that. He hasn’t been able to, and now the team is looking to move on. Will they be able to find a trade partner?
