The New York Jets will not play their star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, in the final preseason game against the New York Giants. This means that Rodgers will not appear again on the field until September 9 in the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Will this move work out for New York?
New York Jets Sit Aaron Rodgers
At 40 years old, Aaron Rodgers won’t take part in any preseason action this year. Coach Robert Saleh proclaimed that he would not play on Saturday night against the New York Giants, sticking to the program of keeping all starters off the field. It’s part of a trend set during the first two games of the preseason, neither of which had starters.
Rodgers is coming back from a severe Achilles injury. He will make his comeback on “Monday Night Football,” only two days shy of the first anniversary of the injury. He hasn’t played a full game in nearly 20 months since he last played for the Green Bay Packers. After a layoff of that length, he seems ready to go.
Coach Saleh’s Decision For The New York Jets
Saleh is resting Rodgers for the preseason because of the work they have put in previously. The New York Jets had joint practices with the New York Giants, Carolina Panthers, and Atlanta Falcons, which saw him get a lot of practice alongside the starting offense. To him, they have had enough work to put them in good shape for the approach.
Saleh’s not worried that Rodgers has a rusty feeling. He believes he has taken enough practice reps to his credit—some 800 during training camp. He does not seem too concerned about Rodgers not playing in the preseason. He stated he has no preference about playing in this last preseason game. Rodgers has spoken loudly about what he thinks of the preseason, referring to it as “not real football.” He said that he’s confident in his physical condition and ready to go for the New York Jets season opener.
Rodgers hasn’t played in any preseason game since the 2018 season, so this decision is nothing new. This year, however, things are different considering his recent Achilles injury. That said, he is accustomed to not playing preseason games; therefore, this year isn’t an exception.
Impact on the Team
Because neither Rodgers nor backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor will play, Andrew Peasley will share quarterback duties with Adrian Martinez in the final game. This enables the New York Jets coaching staff to see what they have in these young players, all the while keeping their starters healthy.
While sitting Aaron for the preseason finale is somewhat of a team strategy for the New York Jets, it still reflects the intense practice reps and safeguards against injuries to get Rodgers and the offense ready for an excellent debut. The team, much like the fans, is very curious to find out just how good Rodgers can be—along with a revamped roster—once the games count for real.
