Report: New York Jets Secretly Tried To Replace Key Member Of Offensive Coaching Staff

The New York Jets and their fan base were over the moon when Aaron Rodgers became their quarterback. While last season was a letdown, there is hope for 2024. Rodgers is back and the front office made tweaks to the roster to help improve the play on the field. However, time is running out for the team. Rodgers will be 40-years-old this season and the coaching staff is under pressure to win now. As the team was going all-in, they secretly tried to replace offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.

Report: New York Jets Tried To Replace Nathaniel Hackett

The New York Jets hired Nathaniel Hackett because of his relationship with Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers wants autonomy in the offense. He wants to change plays at the line and call his own in the huddle. Hackett gives him that freedom. However, once Rodgers went down with the Achilles injury, members of the organization were disappointed with how Hackett adapted. NFL Insider Connor Hughes reported there were attempts to replace him.

“But then there’s Hackett. The Jets made legitimate attempts this offseason to hire someone who would, essentially, replace Hackett. Not as a new offensive coordinator, but a title above who would run the show. The Jets had enough things they needed to address this offseason without replacing areas they’re content with. That pursuit tells me, internally, there are legitimate concerns with Hackett’s ability to successfully run things.

It almost feels like the Jets are putting so much faith in Rodgers’ ability to correct Hackett’s wrongdoings. Sources spoke of many, many times last summer where Hackett called a play, then Rodgers changed it completely at the line. They figure he can do the same come the regular season.

That’s a lot to put on the plate of a player, though – even one of Rodgers’ stature. This isn’t the NBA.

If there’s one major concern heading into the Jets season it’s that: Hackett.”

It seems the goal wasn’t to fire Nathaniel Hackett but to bring someone else in to call the plays. Even though Rodgers is an elite quarterback, giving him complete autonomy is a risky plan.

Health Is The Big Wild Card

Health is the biggest question mark for the New York Jets. While this is true for any team, it is even more critical for the Jets. Tyron Smith and Mike Williams were great free-agent signings, but both have an injury history. Rodgers himself may not be the same physically at 40, but he is coming off a serious injury. On defense, the stars like Sauce Gardner and Quiennen Williams have to stay on the field.

The New York Jets have to hope Nathaniel Hackett is able to have a better year as the offensive coordinator in 2024. Their attempts to replace him failed, and it will be interesting to see what the fallout from this report is. Can the New York Jets offense be above average this year and carry this team to the playoffs?
