New York Jets: Jermaine Johnson Suffered Possible Torn Achilles in Week 2 Win

Jermaine Johnson, New York Jets

The New York Jets have won their first game of the season in Week 2 as they defeated the Tennessee Titans 24-17 on the road. However, they may have lost an important piece to the defense in linebacker Jermaine Johnson. The Jets have been able to do well and shake off some of the rust but the defense will be a bit weaker now. Let’s take a dive into what happened and what the New York Jets will have to do going forward.

The New York Jets saw edge rusher/linebacker Jermaine Johnson go down with a non-contact injury during the Week 2 victory over the Tennessee Titans. While they are still waiting for tests to confirm the news, coach Robert Saleh said that it is likely Johnson did suffer the season-ending injury on Sunday. After the game, Jermaine Johnson did speak to reporters and said that it felt as if someone stepped on the back of his leg.

Jermaine Johnson is a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft out of Florida State and has played well as he recorded 8.5 sacks last season. However, it appears that his season is officially going to be over and that makes things a little bit more difficult for the New York Jets to get pressure from the defensive line on the opposing quarterback. Expect to see another first-round pick in Will McDonald IV take his spot on the defensive line going forward.

Will the Jermaine Johnson injury affect Haason Reddick?

Haason Reddick is the only player in the NFL that is holding out for a new contract and has missed the first two games of the regular season, forfeiting $800,000 per game check right now. However, losing Jermaine Johnson for the season may cause the New York Jets to change their stance on a contract extension with Reddick to help with their defense. The team is not in separation mode right now s they are tied for third in the sport with seven total sacks as a team, but there is no arguing that the defense would improve with a veteran coming off the edge and making plays for Gang Green.

The Jets have done a decent job but with the injury to Johnson, they are already going to their depth in an attempt to help the team going forward. However, if they are able to either get Haason Reddick to sign an extension and get him ready for Week 4, as he would likely not be ready to suit up for Thursday night against the New England Patriots, that would significantly help the defense. Otherwise, the New York Jets need to get on the phone and start trying to figure out if they can flip him for another player and/or draft capital.
