New York Jets Aaron Rodgers Visibly Upset During ‘Sloppy’ Practice

The New York Jets have a lot riding on this season. After last year’s hopes were dashed within four snaps, there is fresh optimism heading into 2024. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is fully recovered from his Achilles injury and is ready to lead this offense. The defense has been a top-five unit the past two seasons and is looking hungry again. However, training camp has gotten off to a rocky start. Rodgers was visibly upset on the field today, and his teammates had to do some damage control after practice.

Today was the first time the New York Jets were in pads. The practice was full of mistakes. Rodgers threw an interception, and the line couldn’t block at all, resulting in “sacks.” On one occasion, a lineman stepped on Rodgers after the snap, and shotgun snaps were consistently off-target. The former Packers quarterback wasn’t shy about letting his emotions show at the “sloppy” practice. Teammate Allen Lazard talked about his quarterback’s emotions after the practice.

“I would say ‘demonstrative’ is a good word for him. You’re talking about one of the best, if not the best quarterback of all time, and his standard and level of play is something a lot of guys haven’t seen yet. Even this organization — they haven’t really been with him on game day, because being with him on the sideline on a Sunday is different.

“Honestly, he expects the same standard that he holds himself to out of everyone else, and today just didn’t resemble that at all. I think as an offense we were just a little bit sloppy.”

Aaron Rodgers holds his teammates to a high standard. He knows what it takes to win a Super Bowl. He also knows that he doesn’t have many years left in the NFL. Rodgers doesn’t have five years to gel with his new teammates. The team needs to win and win now. While many will blow this out of proportion, tight end Tyler Conklin believes it is a learning experience.

“I think that’s the beauty of playing with a great like that. You have someone that’s going to, at all times, hold everybody accountable, no matter who you are. I think that’s kind of something that not every team has. I think that’s really a blessing at the end of the day to have someone that cares that much and has a standard like that.”

Cause For Concern?

It isn’t a good thing the practice was sloppy. However, anyone sounding the alarm bells on the New York Jets is doing so prematurely. It’s a bad practice in July. While it is not where the team wants to be, growing pains are expected. Fans would rather see the growing pains in training camp than during the season. The team will hopefully learn from this practice and have a solid rest of the week.

This is something to keep an eye on. If Aaron Rodgers continues to berate his teammates, it could start getting old. This could cause some divisions that could bring down this team from the inside. More than likely, the players will rally around their former MVP quarterback and strive to improve. This team has too much talent not to win games, but it will be interesting to see whether they can compete for a Super Bowl.
