New York Islanders Game 6 Was a Tragic 1-0 Loss

The New York Islanders suffered a tough loss against the Detroit Red Wings.

The New York Islanders lost their sixth season game 1-0 to the Detroit Red Wings. This home game took place in Elmont, New York on Long Island. The New York Islanders were shut out for the third time in six games this season. This was a winnable game and the New York Islanders outplayed Detroit. The Islanders were missing Anthoney Duclair, the star forward and scorer who is out long-term with an Achilles Tendon injury. They probably will not get shut out 41 this season but will continue to struggle to score. This game was a missed opportunity for the New York Islanders.

New York Islanders Outplayed Detroit

The New York Islanders should have won this game. They outshot Detroit 29-10 and had a roughly three-to-one advantage in offensive zone possession. Credit Detroit goaltender, Alex Lyon, for having an outstanding game, but the New York Islanders struggled to put the puck in the net, despite several chances. The Islanders will make many goaltenders look good.

Third Shutout In Six Games

The Islanders lost 3-0 in Dallas on October 12 and they lost 1-0 to St. Louis on October 17. Both of those games were on the road. The 1-0 loss to the Detroit Red Wings last night was at home. There were several bad signs in last night’s game, despite the statistical domination. First, the Islanders missed injured star Ducair. The fact of the matter, however, is that they were shut out twice with him. Second, the Islanders were very good on their first two power plays, though they did not score, but they took no shots on their third power play and even struggled to get the puck into the offensive zone.

Third, a bunch of players who the Islanders need to step up their play did not. Simon Holmstrom filled in for Duclair on the first line and the first power play unit. He did not score. He missed several golden opportunities. Not only did Mat Barzal and Bo Horvat fail to score they also missed several golden opportunities. Brock Nelson also hit the crossbar with a shot and Anders Lee was a non-factor. Ilya Sorokin played well in goal.

Missed Opportunity

This was a winnable home game for the Islanders and now the schedule gets more difficult. Coming up they face the best team in the National Hockey League, the defending Stanley Cup Champions, and not one, but two, back-to-backs, with which the Islanders struggled last year. The points count the same in October as they do in March. The Islanders will likely miss these points come playoff time.

Scoring Summary

The scoring summary for this game is easy, with only one goal scored. Unfortunately, this is becoming a theme for the Islanders. The only goal scored in the game was by the Detroit Red Wings legend Patrick Kane, at 8:54 of the first period. That goal stood up. The New York Islanders were completely lost offensively and looked increasingly lost as the game went on. This is not good given the Islanders upcoming schedule is difficult.

Conclusion

The Islanders did dominate the Detroit Red Wings in this game, but the fact is they were shut out for the third time in six games and missed a golden opportunity in this game. The Islanders play a very good Devils team on October 25 on the road. Then they come home to face the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on October 26. This is a back-to-back game, which they struggled with last season. Then the Islanders play another back-to-back next week. They host the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, October 29 and they play a game on the road against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday, October 30.
