The first week of training camp for the New York Giants is already in the books and it’s safe to say that there was much anticipation surrounding it. After an offseason with lots of drama that saw the Giants say goodbye to one of their best players in Saquon Barkley and rumors that New York could be looking for Daniel Jones’ replacement, there seems to be a lot at stake in 2024.
So the Giants needed to come out in training camp and look impressive early on after going 6-11 last season to miss the playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. And with the first week of training camp now over, here are the three biggest takeaways from the New York Giants camp.
The Giants are lucky to have Malik Nabers
With just a week already in the books, rookie Wide Receiver Malik Nabers already looks like he’s going to be a problem for opposing defenses. The Giants drafted Nabers with the sixth overall pick in this past year’s NFL Draft and reports are already coming out that he’s looked awfully impressive. Nabers is already starting to become a leader on this Giants roster.
During a press conference with reporters after practice, Nabers said Head Coach Brian Daboll asked the rookie wide receiver what play call he wanted to draw up with the Giants on offense.
“I said, ‘Well, let’s throw a go ball,’ ” Nabers said. “And Daniel came up to me, like, ‘What do you want? You want to check out of the press [coverage]?’ I said, ‘Nah. Just throw it up.’ He was like, ‘I got you.’ The chemistry showed.”
That chemistry was indeed shown as that play resulted in a 60-yard pass connection between quarterback Daniel Jones and the rookie wideout. The Giants are showing they have so much trust in their rookie wide receiver which is why New York should be very lucky to have him. With just one week of training camp, the trust between Nabers, Daboll, and Jones is on full display which is a major takeaway from the Giants training camp.
The Return of Daniel Jones

This was something every Giants fan was curious about heading into training camp, and that is the health and mobility of Daniel Jones. Injuries have bugged the Giants signal-caller since he entered the league in 2019 and after one week down of training camp, he looks good.
As previously mentioned, Jones seems to already have a great connection with his new teammate in Nabers as the two hit on a 60-yard pass connection. Jones is also using his legs more often now after suffering a torn ACL not too long ago. He seems to be very healthy, especially with his legs.
This is perhaps Jones’ most important training camp yet with “Big Blue” after so much speculation this past offseason about whether or not New York may be looking to find his replacement. Even though we are just one week down, Jones’ strong beginning of Giants training camp is something to take note of.
The development of Jalin Hyatt
It shouldn’t be a surprise if second-year wide receiver Jalin Hyatt has a huge sophomore season for the Giants. Despite having just 373 receiving yards on 23 receptions and no touchdowns last season, he’s still shown bits and pieces of how dangerous he could be. And that seems to be translating into training camp so far.
Daboll spoke to reporters on Friday and spoke very highly of the former Tennessee Volunteer which should have every Giant fan fired up. The third-year head coach said that he’s seen Hyatt’s all-around game improving by the day and his route running and understanding of playing in the NFL have all improved.
Hyatt may end up being the Giants number two wide receiver next to Nabers once Week one hits, so it has been great to see Hyatt’s development in just one week of training camp already. We all saw just how good Hyatt can be from his rookie season, and his fast start to training camp is a big takeaway.
