A Case for Tommy DeVito For New York Giants QB2

An early case for Tommy DeVito to be the NY Giants QB2

Just two days removed from the New York Giants preseason win over the Detroit Lions, do they already have a quarterback controversy for the backup position? We did not see starting Quarterback Daniel Jones suit up on Thursday, but we did see Drew Lock start the game for New York, followed by Tommy DeVito going the rest of the way for “Big Blue.”

With the first game already in the books, Giants fans are already calling for DeVito to be the Giants No. 2 quarterback after a much better showing and much more production than Lock on Thursday. DeVito was a bright spot for the Giants during a disappointing 2023 season when he led the Giants on a three-game winning streak and got the affectionate nickname, “Tommy Cutlets.” Despite signing Lock this offseason who has had starting quarterback experience in the past, DeVito should be considered for the backup spot.

Drew Lock Struggled and Now Injured

The Giants gave the former Denver Bronco and Seattle Seahawk the start on Thursday and he did not look sharp, to say the least. The rain of course was certainly no help, but Lock’s shaky beginning to his Giants tenure has some Giants fans already calling DeVito’s name.

Lock played in four series on Thursday and each series ended in punts and his stats were certainly not good either. Lock went just 4-of-10 for 17 yards, he was sacked once and he also threw an ugly interception. On top of that, Lock is now also expected to miss quite some time with a hip pointer injury and a strained oblique that he suffered in the game.

Even though the Giants gave Lock a $5 million deal this offseason, his durability is certainly something of concern and Lock has had injuries in the past. DeVito’s strong showing in the first preseason game also can’t go unseen, especially after what he was able to do last year in his limited playing time toward the end of the season.

DeVito’s Eyebrow-Raising Performance

Even though it’s just the first preseason game of the season and Tommy DeVito and the Giants were going up against backups, he looked awfully good. He even showed glimpses of what he did last season in the six games he started in.

Once DeVito took over the rest of the game, he led New York to two scoring drives, passed for 92 yards on eight completions, and was only sacked once on the night. DeVito also did not turn over the football and quite simply looked very comfortable and poised under center for the Giants. It’s going to be very hard for Head Coach Brian Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen to make this decision once the preseason comes to an end. It looked like, at least in just this game, DeVito made the decision a little easier on them.

Daboll and Schoen also don’t want to end up placing the former undrafted quarterback on the active roster as any team across the NFL can pick him up if that does happen. While DeVito only played in one preseason game, he certainly raised some eyebrows. If he shines again next week against the Houston Texans, the fan favorite may end up the New York Giants second-string quarterback.
