New York Giants Double Up At Quarterback, Sign Russell Wilson To 1-Year Deal

New York Giants

The New York Giants went into the offseason with no quarterbacks on the roster. In the past few days, the room has gotten quite crowded. The team signed former number one overall pick Jameis Winston to a two-year deal this weekend. Many thought this signaled their quarterback search was over. That was not the case. The team has signed former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal.

New York Giants Sign QB Russell Wilson

Last year, Russell Wilson had to hold off Justin Fields. This year, he’ll have to compete with Winston. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports it is a one-year deal worth up to $21.5 million with $10.5 million guaranteed. Schefter indicates he is in pole position for the starting job, and Winston will likely back him up. The former Seahawks, Broncos, and Steelers quarterback mulled over many possibilities but ultimately decided the Giants were the best fit.

Wilson didn’t have a bad season last year with Pittsburgh. In 11 starts, he threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. However, the season ended in a very familiar way. The team got bounced in the first round of the playoffs. While Wilson played well, he didn’t necessarily elevate the offense in the way the Steelers had hoped he would. For the New York Giants, Wilson is an immediate upgrade over Drew Lock and Daniel Jones.

Fallout Of The Move

The New York Giants feel very set at the quarterback position. If the Wilson and Winston experiment doesn’t work, they can look to the 2026 NFL Draft to get the future signal caller. However, the offense has some quality pieces, including star wide receiver Malik Nabers. He was a deadly deep threat during his time at LSU, and Wilson is known for throwing moonballs. This immediately raises the floor of their offense from last year.

The Steelers now have a ton of questions at the position. Fields signed with the New York Jets, and Wilson spurned them for the Giants. They are down to very few options. Aaron Rodgers is still lurking and reports indicated he had a positive meeting with the team earlier this week. They could also look to the draft and try and grab one of the middle tier quarterbacks like Jalen Milroe or Jaxson Dart. The team traded for DK Metcalf but as of this moment, Mason Rudolph is the starter.

Final Thoughts

The New York Giants needed to do something different at quarterback. They got rid of Jones last year, and they couldn’t go another year with subpar play. Wilson brings a veteran presence to the offense and to the locker room. Can the Giants play spoiler this year in a tough NFC East?
