Rumor: New York Giants “Top Priority” At QB Is Matthew Stafford

Los Angeles Rams

The New York Giants have struggled to find a quality quarterback since Eli Manning retired. They drafted Daniel Jones in the top ten, hoping he would be the answer. That dream ended last year when they released him from the team. Last season, the position was a comedy of errors at times, and the top priority of the offseason is to find a new quarterback. Many have speculated they will try and draft either Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders but a new report indicates they may be looking the veteran route and targeting Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.

New York Giants Targeting Matthew Stafford?

News broke earlier this week that the Los Angeles Rams were letting Matthew Stafford explore trade opportunities. This was not a trade request or an indication this is guaranteed to happen. Many teams who are in need of a quarterback perked up. The New York Giants are apparently one of those teams. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported that it is “pretty clear” the team is making Stafford “their top priority at quarterback.”

According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, the main issue between the Rams and Stafford is money. The former first-round pick is seeking “more than $50 million.” While the Rams may end up paying him, they also may want to hear what others may offer. The New York Giants have the third overall pick and a top pick in the second round. They could also throw in some young players and future draft capital. It remains to be seen whether the Rams are interested in the offer.

Good Idea?

Would this be a good idea for the New York Giants? The offense has some good pieces. Malik Nabers had a historic rookie season, catching 109 passes for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns. Tyrone Tracy Jr. was another rookie who had a solid year, rushing for 839 yards and five touchdowns. It isn’t a bad idea to look into bringing in a quarterback who has a proven track record of success. On the defensive side of the ball, the Giants boast one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. With a few more players, this unit could be in the top ten, which would help the offense.

The issue would be what it would take to get Stafford. Not only would it require significant draft capital, but it would also involve signing him to a big contract. This would signal that the New York Giants believe they are ready to compete for a Super Bowl. Failure to make the move could set the franchise back years. The team has committed to the rebuild up to this point and there is wisdom in staying the course rather than trying to rush the process.

Final Thoughts

The New York Giants have many decisions to make this offseason. If they do not get Matthew Stafford, they have to decide whether they want to take a quarterback at three or fill the need at another position. Next year’s quarterback class is slated to be stacked, so there is wisdom in filling out the roster and waiting a year. The quarterback is the most important position in football, and the Giants are likely doing their due diligence to make sure they put a quality product on the field in 2025.
