New Orleans Saints Add 11-Year Veteran To Deal

Dallas Cowboys Brandin Cooks New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints have had an active offseason. This was a huge surprise for many as their salary cap situation was one of the worst in the NFL. However, they have continued to manipulate the cap in order to try and improve their team. Injuries took over last year, and the team brought in head coach Kellen Moore to try and jumpstart the offense. They made another move to boost the offense, signing former Cowboys receiver Brandin Cooks to a deal.

New Orleans Saints Sign WR Brandin Cooks

The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov reported the New Orleans Saints are signing wide receiver Brandin Cooks to a deal. It is a bit of a homecoming for the wide receiver who started his career with the team. He was drafted in the first round by the Saints in the 2014 NFL Draft, catching 20 touchdowns in three years with the team. After his stint there, he has bounced around the league, playing for the Patriots, the Rams, the Texans, and most recently, the Cowboys.

Last season was a down year as he struggled with injuries, only catching 26 passes for 259 yards. However, he has consistently been between 650-1,000 yards throughout his career. He also doesn’t need to be the primary target in an offense with Chris Olave, Alvin Kamara, and many other weapons.

2025 Outlook

The New Orleans Saints have the advantage of playing in the NFC South. This is one of the weakest divisions in football. While the Atlanta Falcons hope to build on last year’s success under Michael Penix Jr., they are far from a juggernaut in the division. The Saints biggest questions come from their aging core of players. Derek Carr, Kamara, and Taysom Hill are all above 30 years old and have plenty of miles on them.

Moore should be able to help the offense immensely. He is coming off a Super Bowl victory as the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles. Dennis Allen was more of a defensive coach and couldn’t unlock the offense. The front office certainly is being aggressive with their free agent signings, hoping to snap a wild card spot in the NFC.

Final Thoughts

The New Orleans Saints continue to kick the can on the salary cap. It baffles me and many other fans that they can keep this kind of spending rate up. Will the Saints be able to make some noise in the NFC next year, or will all this spending be for nothing?
