The New Orleans Pelicans know that they need to take care of business against the worst teams. And halfway through their game against the Detroit Pistons, it looks like they are not overlooking anyone. Especially without one of their more important and versatile players, they understand the need to squash any room for hope against some of the NBA bottom feeders.
Moreover, this is a Pelicans team that wants to make a real statement in the playoffs this year. Therefore, it’s a good sign that they are not only playing well without a full roster but have also improved since the beginning of the year on the court.
Can you see New Orleans actually making a run in the postseason this year?
New Orleans Pelicans Strong First-Half Performance
Zion Williamson led the way for the New Orleans Pelicans. Yes, playing a bad Detroit Pistons team. But you can only beat who is in front of you, as the saying goes in sports. Again, it’s impressive that this team not only came out of the gate strong but also looked to make a statement and not mess around. Too often, we see the better team play it safe or start out slow. And this is an encouraging sign for this team that has higher aspirations: they more or less put the game out of reach early on.
Williamson had 17 points in the first half. All of his damage was done down low. Anything he wanted, he got, and he took advantage of mismatches. When he’s healthy, he’s one of the best players in the league. And it was nice to be able to watch him showcase his frontcourt dominance for the New Orleans Pelicans.
Others for the New Orleans Pelicans
Additionally, Naji Marshall came off the bench and scored 11 points. Marshall shot an impressive three of four from three-point range. If he can get himself going and help space the floor on a consistent basis, then this New Orleans Pelicans team will be lethal in the playoffs. Furthermore, Jonas Valanciunas had a strong first half as well.
While his stats may not be as eye-popping, anytime he had a mismatch, he too took advantage. He finished with eight points and four rebounds at the half, and if Williamson had not been able to play, he was playing well enough that a double-double from Valanciunas would not have been surprising for the New Orleans Pelicans.
