Charges Dropped Against New England Patriots Wide Receiver In Gambling Case

2024 NFL Draft: New England Patriots Make Surprising Wide Receiver 2nd Round Pick Kayshon Boutte

The New England Patriots are in need of wide receiver help. Last year, they picked LSU standout Kayshon Boutte in the sixth round. The Tigers have a history of producing quality receivers, and the Patriots were happy to take a flyer on day three. However, Boutte was arrested in January over allegations of illegal sports betting when he was in college. After an investigation, it was reported today that the charges have been dropped.

The charges against Kayshon Boutte were that he created an alias account to get around the age requirement for gambling in the state of Louisiana. According to the charges, 8,900 bets were placed across 17 college football games. This included ones where LSU was participating. The gambling from the account reportedly continued after the NFL Draft.

The receiver was 20 at the time, and the bets were placed between April 6, 2022, and May 7, 2023. In addition to the illegal gambling charges, computer fraud was also a part of the investigation. It is unclear why the charges were dropped, but now the New England Patriots can move forward.

Outlook For The Former LSU Tiger

Kayshon Boutte will be battling for a roster spot with many other young players. The New England Patriots selected two rookie wide receivers. Ja’Lynn Polk was a part of the high-powered Washington Huskies offense that made it to the national championship. While Rome Odunze got a lot of attention (for a good reason), Polk was no slouch.

In the fourth round, the Patriots took UCF receiver Javon Baker, who had an all-time quote after he was drafted. While he was a day-three pick, many like the upside he brings, especially in an offense where he could get lots of opportunities. If both of these players outperform Boutte, he could be on the outside looking in.

2024 Outlook

The New England Patriots are in full rebuild mode. While it might mean they don’t win a lot of games, it does mean they might be fun to watch this year. Last year was bad. The play on the field was almost unwatchable at times as Mac Jones attempted to run the offense. Now, Drake Maye is in the fold and he has some young weapons to throw to. On defense, this team has elite players up and down the roster.

In the tough AFC East, this team likely won’t win many games in 2024. However, this season is about laying the foundation for years to come. The team dominated for the better part of two decades. They now want to make sure they can dominate for more decades.
