At the NFL Combine, Joe Milton was hitting receivers down the field with 80-yard throws. He threw the hardest of all the quarterback prospects. Some NFL scouts see a clear player comp in Jordan Love. While Milton is not ready to start right now, the raw skills are there. If he sits and learns, he could become one of the best quarterbacks in the league. If Maye doesn’t work out, the New England Patriots could have a successor waiting in the wings.
Many wondered whether the New England Patriots would try to switch him to another position because of his raw skills. However, Joe Milton has been adamant that he will not switch positions. He wants to be a quarterback and believes he has the skills to make it happen.
Jordan Love Comparisons
It is easy to see why people are comparing Joe Milton to Jordan Love. Both came out of college with huge arms but had some real questions about accuracy. Throwing a deep ball is great, but if it isn’t on target, it doesn’t do anyone much good. Love sat on the bench for three years, and in his first season as a starter, he was one of the league leaders in passing touchdowns.
The caution here is the situation is way different. The New England Patriots do not have a future Hall of Fame quarterback for Joe Milton to sit behind for a year. Love got to sit behind Aaron Rodgers for three years. Milton has Jacoby Brissett on the roster, but he is a far cry from Rodgers. The coaching staff is also different, as Matt LaFleur and Jerod Mayo have different qualities. Any time a comparison like this is made, it is important to be cautious.
Sound Strategy
Whatever happens with Joe Milton, the New England Patriots made the right decision in drafting two quarterbacks. Good teams draft quarterbacks when they do not need them. It tends to work out in the end. The Eagles took heat for taking Jalen Hurts when they had Carson Wentz. Green Bay was laughed at for taking Jordan Love. You never know what is going to happen in this league. Things change quickly. Having two potential stars on the roster isn’t a bad idea.
