The Netherlands, who were knocked out in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 by England, have a history of competitive clashes with Germany, including a World Cup final loss in 1974 and a Euro ’88 victory. Although Germany won their most recent friendly 2-1 in March, recent competitive matches have often gone in the Netherlands’ favor.

Germany, under new coach Julian Nagelsmann, also scored five goals in their opener against Hungary. Despite missing several key players, including Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller, Germany’s squad includes rising stars like Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, and Florian Wirtz. After a disappointing Euros on home soil, Germany aims for a strong showing in the Nations League and looks to build momentum for the 2026 World Cup.

On the other hand where Netherlands also scored five goals and secured a win against Bosnia. The Netherlands retained the ball possession and dominated most of the game. Despite this, Bosnia managed to score two goals past the Dutchman squad. The German army has better stats when it comes to one-on-one rivalry, but this is an opportunity for the Netherlands to imbalance those stats.

Team News

In the Netherlands squad, Joshua Zirkzee is expected to retain his spot after scoring on the weekend, with Brian Brobbey and Wout Weghorst also potential starters. Coach Ronald Koeman has made some notable absences, including Steven Bergwijn and Memphis Depay. Injuries have sidelined Micky van de Ven and Joey Veerman, but Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber made a return against Bosnia.

For Germany, Joshua Kimmich will captain the team for the 10th time. The squad’s youthful attacking line-up could feature Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, and either Kai Havertz or Niclas Fullkrug, the latter of whom has been in excellent form with 14 goals in 22 appearances. Leroy Sane remains injured, and Antonio Rudiger is rested, leading to a likely defensive pairing of Jonathan Tah and Nico Schlotterbeck.

Netherlands vs. Germany: Possible Starting XI

Netherlands: Verbruggen; Dumfries, De Ligt, Van Dijk, Ake; Schouten, Gravenberch, Reijnders; Simons, Gakpo; Zirkzee

Germany: Ter Stegen; Kimmich, Schlotterbeck, Tah, Mittelstadt; Andrich, Pavlovic; Musiala, Havertz, Wirtz; Fullkrug
