With the Euro 2024 set to begin on the 14th of June and last to the 14th of July, Netherlands head coach, Ronald Koeman, has finally streamlined their original provisional list of players called up to represent the country in the tournament, despite having nine more days to decide.
Netherlands got drawn in Group D of the Euros and would play their first match of the tournament against Poland on the 16th of June. After Poland, the Netherlands would clash with France on the 21st of June before locking horns with Austria on the 25th. In preparation, the Netherlands would face Canada and Iceland in friendly matches on the 6th and 10th of June respectively in the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
Ian Maatsen Dropped From Euro 2024 Squad
Ian Maatsen has been dropped from the final list of players the Netherlands would be taking to the Euro 2024. The 22-year-old Chelsea defender spent the second half of the season playing in Borussia Dortmund after falling out of favor with Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea. He has qualified with Dortmund to face Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
Ian Maatsen is a priority transfer option for Borussia Dortmund in the upcoming transfer window. Borussia Dortmund plan to approach Chelsea for Ian Maatsen’s permanent signature after the Champions League final to negotiate a deal. It is expected to be lower than the £35 million clause value Chelsea attached. Maatsen is unsure of what the future holds for him at Chelsea.
Since moving to the German club, the Netherlands defender has featured in 16 Bundesliga games, starting 15 of them. He’s scored twice and assisted twice. He’s also played six games in the Champions League, all coming in the knockout stages of the competition, scoring once in the 4-2 home victory over Atlético Madrid. He will feature in the final against Real Madrid on Saturday.
Other Players Dropped From The Final Squad
Nick Olij is another player dropped by the Netherlands. The goalkeeper has been ever-present for the Dutch Eredivisie side, Sparta Rotterdam, this season. In the 34 matches he played in the league for his club side, he kept seven clean sheets.
Quinten Timber has also been dropped from the final Euro 2024 squad. The midfielder who plays for Eredivisie club Feyenoord started all 31 matches he played for the club in the league. The three matches he missed were due to injuries. He scored seven goals and provided nine assists in the league.
Marten de Roon has been dropped by Netherlands due to injury. The 33-year-old Atalanta midfielder was an unused substitute in the club’s 3-0 Europa League victory over Bayer Leverkusen. He sustained a muscle injury in the 1-0 defeat in the Coppa Italia final to Juventus.

Can Netherlands Go All The Way At The Euros?
Netherlands is ranked 7th in the world in the FIFA rankings and is the second highest-ranked team in Group D of the Euro 2024 behind France (2nd), Austria (25th), and Poland (28th). In the last five matches between the Netherlands and Poland, the Dutch have won four and drawn once.
Netherlands has also won six of their last six matches against Austria but the challenge is against France. France has bested the Dutch seven times in the last eight matches they’ve faced each other. If one plus one equals two, then the Dutch are guaranteed two wins and at most, a draw, in the Euro 2024 group stage.
