Nehra links Yashasvi Jaiswal’s breakthrough to Virat Kohli

Jaiswal

What a wonderful ride young Yashasvi Jaiswal has had with the cricket bat! Jaiswal had an amazing test series with England. He scored as many as 700 plus runs, but his IPL form was a different story altogether, which made him cold in the Indian T20 World Cup. However, for the present time, Jaiswal is through with the retirement of cricketing legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from T20I cricket.

On current form, the talented young left-handed opener, along with Shubman Gill, is being treated as one of the future openers of India in the shortest form of the game, and there is a high probability that this young Indian batter will open for India in the next T20 world cup to be held in 2026.

 Jaiswal’s recent performances

Jaiswal’s comeback journey started when he was selected for the Indian team in a series against Zimbabwe. He got into form instantly, given that he smashed an unbeaten 93 in the fourth T20I. Bringing his good show into the series against Sri Lanka, Jaiswal made a breathtaking inning of 40 of 20 balls in Pallekele Stadium. That inning had five boundaries and two sixes in it, and one could see glimpses of what was to come.

Quite the same as Gill, Shubman Gill was brilliant as his partner, scoring 34 runs off 16 balls only. Altogether, they presented spectators with a view of India’s brighter future in the T20 format of the game.

 Ashish Nehra’s witty commentary

During the post-match interaction aired on the Sony Sports Network, former India left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra jokingly put it across that Jaiswal would require a biomarker for Kohli and Sharma’s retirement. Nehra further implied that if Kohli and Sharma had continued to play further, Jaiswal’s excellent hitting display, which was dominated more by the net, could have been kept at bay.

Trolling Nehra, Ajay Jadeja had wondered that if the scenario were different, Jaiswal would have felt the difference not having to face Kohli and Sharma in the T20I team. Nehra responded:

According to me, there is just one difference. If Virat and Rohit were still playing this format, then whatever strokes we saw from you today, you would have played those in the nets. Now you are getting to play those shots in the match because they (Virat and Rohit) are not there.

Jaiswal’s reaction to Nehra’s comments showed a mix of surprise and embarrassment, reflecting the weight of the implication.

The T20 World Cup scenario

Jaiswal was originally favored to be Rohit Sharma’s T20 World Cup opening companion. Nevertheless, if Kohli performs as badly in the 2024 IPL season as any other year of IPL matches, making the total score of 741 runs the second-best IPL season of his career, the management thought to give a try to the Rohit-Kohli opening pair.

Still, this blend did not give the intended outcome. Failures were Kohli, who could only manage 75 runs in the first seven matches at his best against Bangladesh. However, Kohli had his moment in the T20 World Cup final, where India was struggling at 34/4; yet, Kohli played a match-winning knock of 76 runs. The innings contributed to India winning such a close victory over South Africa by seven runs, and he was duly awarded Player of the Match and, thus, a fabulous end to his T20I career.
