Neeraj Chopra Settles for Silver in Paris After Gold in Tokyo

Neeraj Chopra

Neeraj Chopra’s throw at the Paris Olympics was nothing short of marvelous. With a season-best throw of 89.45 meters, he won the silver medal in a nail-biting finish in the javelin throw final. The performance was held at the Stade de France in Paris, which has been one of the toughest competition locations with several incredible performances. The energy in the stadium was electric, and each throw contributed to its rise.

A Close Contest for Gold

That great throw by Chopra was not good enough to secure him the gold medal. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem produced a new Olympic record of 92.97 meters, which was beyond the best throw by Chopra.  Neeraj Chopra’s only clean attempt proved to be his best throw of the season and proved to be a great testament to his skill and consistency. His performance, therefore, put a massive silver lining on India’s Olympic tally of five for the Paris Games. This haul includes four bronze medals, putting the haul significantly on the world stage.

Earlier in the competition, Chopra had made news when he qualified for the final with a throw of 89.34 meters, which was the best at a world championship and also not far off from his personal best achieved in the Stockholm Diamond League when he threw 89.94 meters. His qualification round was fine, as he qualified on his very first throw to signal that he had indeed arrived with style and form.

Neeraj Chopra’s Historic Achievements

This silver medal is going to put Chopra among the elite group of Indian athletes—joining the ranks of five Indians who have been medaled in two different Olympic Games, carrying on from his Tokyo 2020 gold. That places him among remarkable legends like Norman Pritchard, Sushil Kumar, PV Sindhu, and Manu Bhaker, each of whom has left their stamp on the pages of Indian sporting history.

The feat has further cemented the legacy of Chopra in athletics. He joins Sushil Kumar and PV Sindhu as one among the three Indian athletes who have won medals in different Summer Games. He now becomes one of three Indian athletes, after Sushil Kumar and PV Sindhu, to win medals in two different Summer Games. Indeed, he was the shining light that the nation needed at this desperate time. His honesty and skills lifted him into a vivid personality in javelin throwing and made him an inspiration to many budding athletes.

Looking Ahead

If Chopra looks back at that journey today, the silver medal from Paris stands as testimony to their hard work and perseverance. Though he couldn’t repeat it in Tokyo, where he captured the gold, the achievement in Paris was a moment of pride for Indian sports. There is continuous support and accolades; therefore, the future for Chopra in athletics doesn’t look dim at all—people are all eyes out for the next chapter regarding his athletic career.
