The Paris Summer Olympics 2024 Games are quickly approaching as one of the most exciting and competitive global events available to athletes is just a few weeks away. Over 325 gold medals will be handed out to athletes representing 184 countries from around the world between July 26 – August 11, 2024. More than 10,000 athletes will travel to Europe in the hopes of standing in any place on the podium at the Paris Summer Olympics 2024.
The Opening Ceremonies will occur on Friday, July 26. Two events, soccer and rugby sevens, will begin a few days earlier with matches scheduled on Wednesday, July 24. In America, the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will be carried on NBC Network and their subscription service, Peacock.
Paris Summer Olympics 2024 Features 32 Sports
The Summer Games will use 35 different venues with most around the Paris region. According to the Associated Press, some events that sit a bit further outside of the French capital include “Lille, Vaires-sur-Marne, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Saint-Étienne, Nice, Nantes and Châteauroux.” Those events are soccer matches or nautical-themed competitions that would be much more difficult within the borders of Paris.
Breakdancing will join the rotation of Games with medals in both male and female events. Skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing return to the Olympic Summer Games for the second time. The surfing competition will occur from Tahiti in French Polynesia about 10,000 miles away from the athletes at the Paris Summer Olympics 2024.
There is a reduction in weightlifting events in Paris. Olympic Games organizers will adjust the event schedule every four years to account for changes in the global sports landscape.
U.S.A. Bringing 500+ Athletes Across The Pond
The United States of America will have the most representation during the Paris Summer Olympics 2024. The U.S.A. will be sending 588 athletes to the game. While the U.S.A. will be heavily featured in these Summer Games, there is one event they will not field a men’s or women’s team, handball, as neither squad qualified for the event in their category.
The United States has a successful track record in medaling in the Summer Olympics and is the odds-on favorite to win the most Gold medals, as well as the overall medal count. The United States has claimed the most medals in seven straight Olympics while sitting atop the Gold Medal leaderboard in six of the seven Games. China and Great Britain have the next highest medal projections according to Forbes.
They will be unable to win a medal in handball without a team, but four other sports will have an opportunity to break the medal-less draught in their respective sports. Badminton, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Table Tennis, and Trampoline are the other sports that the United States has not found itself in a podium placement.
United States Leads List of 184 Competing Countries
The Americans will be joined by 45 competitors from Russia and Belarus, who have both been excluded from participation in the Summer Games. Therefore, these athletes will compete under “Individual Natural Athletes”, which will be represented by the French abbreviation “AIN”.
Several countries will be sending one representative to the Paris Summer Olympics 2024 Games. Athletes representing Andorra, Benin, Bhutan, Bolivia, Central African Republic, Comoros, Dominica, Gabon, Guyana, Kiribati, Laos, Liechtenstein, Marshall Islands, Myanmar, Oman, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tonga, Turkmenistan, and Yemen will be the lone individual competing under their countries flag at the global event.
An additional 36 athletes will compete as part of the IOC Refugee Olympic Team.
