On Friday, April 12, NBA Hall of Famer Allen Iverson is set to be immortalized for his contributions to the game at the Penn Medicine Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex in Camden, NJ. With close to 20 years dedicated to going hard in the paint, the 1997 Rookie of the Year is set to receive his very own commemorative sculpture on Legends’ Walk. Legends’ Walk consists of a set of statues that were constructed to pay tribute to former 76ers players and basketball legends including Charles Barkley and Julius “Dr. J” Erving.
Philadelphia 76ers: What’s the Best Gift You Can Give to The Answer?
Iverson is officially the tenth former 76ers player to be receiving his flowers in one of the best ways possible. The Answer is set to have his likeness put on display for all to see as the Philadelphia basketball team will honor him with his very over sculpture in the Penn Medicine Training Complex that the 76ers train in based in New Jersey. The Answer is no stranger to accolades. In his 2000- 2001 season alone, Iverson averaged 31.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 2.5 steals in 41.9 minutes per game. Currently, Iverson has the ninth-highest scoring average in league history coming in at 26. and owns the third-highest scoring average in playoff history at 29.7. Can you guess the top two players?
They are none other than the living GOAT Michael Jordan and Dallas Mavericks point guard Luka Doncic.
The Philadelphia 76ers Co-Owners Applaud Allen’s Efforts
“Allen Iverson is one of the greatest 76ers to ever live and one of the most iconic players in the history of the NBA, and we’re thrilled to honor his accomplishments with a well-deserved sculpture on Legends Walk,” the Philadephia 76ers co-owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer said in a statement. “Paying homage to the legends who paved the way for our franchise is not only the right thing to do; it’s an incredible source of inspiration for current and future generations of 76ers players and staff who enter our Training Complex every day, as well as kids in the city of Philadelphia and at large.”
3 More NBA Legends and Their Statues
Iverson of the Philadelphia 76ers isn’t the only player who’s received a larger-than-life statue made in their honor nor will he be the last. Many more have been immortalized in either bronze or marble.
Dirk Nowitzki – #41 on Dallas Mavericks
Can you think of a better day to unveil a commemorative statue than Christmas? The 7-foot Wurzburg phenom and fellow Hall of Fame inductee was honored in 2022. His son and minority owner Mark Cuban were present. Nowitzki attained many feats throughout his illustrious career. This includes being one of only a handful of players with more than 30,000 points, 10,000 rebounds, and 1000 three-pointers. He also currently holds the record for most seasons spent with a single franchise coming in at 21. Dirk spent his entire tenure with the Dallas Mavericks.
Shaquille O’Neal – #34 on the Los Angeles Lakers
It feels appropriate that a larger-than-life figure receives his very own larger-than-life figure. The 7-foot-1 former center was treated with his own bronze likeness back on March 24, 2017, in the Staples Center. However, the friendly giant wasn’t afraid to shed some tears as peers from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The late great Kobe Bryant lauded his efforts in the game.
Stephon Marbury – #3 on New York Knicks (Respect with Philadelphia 76ers Icon)
Former New York Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury not only has his own statue but also a museum! Due to Starbury’s adoration in China, both are housed in Beijing. He also coaches the Beijing Royal Fighters for the Chinese Basketball Association. Also, in a humorous flashback Friday, check out future statue inductee Philadelphia 76ers Iverson. He’s ribbing Starbury about his statue housed in the Mastercard Center.
