Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics won their 18th championship after dominating the Dallas Mavericks in game 5. Following a blowout loss to the Mavericks in Game 4, many hoped the Mavericks could pull off a challenging win in the Celtics’ home arena. However, the Boston Celtics increased their intensity and dominated Game 5. Let’s take a look at how they won each quarter.

Boston Celtics Take Early Lead

Both teams started slowly in the first quarter. The score was a mere 4-2 and 8:42 left in the quarter. The Dallas Mavericks shot only 11% from the field on 9 attempts and 0% from three-point range on five attempts. In contrast, the Celtics started shooting 40% on 10 attempts and 25% from three on four attempts.

The Boston Celtics then went on a 5-point run to bring the score to 9-2 with 7:26 left in the quarter. The Dallas Mavericks fought back, reducing the deficit to three points with the score at 16-13 and 3:45 remaining in the quarter. Then the Celtics went on a 9-0 run in the last minutes of the first quarter to extend their lead to 10 points.

The final score of the first quarter was 28-10. The Dallas Mavericks finished the quarter shooting 35% from the field on 20 attempts and 25% from three-point range on 12 attempts. In contrast, the Boston Celtics shot 44% from the field on 25 attempts and 30% from three-point range on 10 attempts. The Celtics outrebounded the 13 to 9 in the first quarter.

Boston Celtics Dominate Second Quarter

The Celtics dominated the second quarter, extending their lead to 14 points with 8:27 left. The Mavericks began to push back, reducing their deficit to nine points with five minutes remaining. However, the Celtics went on a run in the last five minutes of the quarter. Payton Pritchard hit a half-court three-pointer to end the first half, increasing the Celtics’ lead to 21 points.

The Dallas Mavericks improved their overall shooting percentage to 48% from the field by the end of the second quarter. The Boston Celtics also increased their shooting percentage to 52%. The Celtics continued to outrebound the Mavericks 17 to 16. The quarter ended with the Celtics leading 67 to 46.

Boston Celtics Maintain Lead In Third Quarter

The Celtics increased their lead to 26 points with 9:10 left in the third quarter. The Dallas Mavericks pushed back, reducing their deficit to 16 points. However, the Celtics managed to extend the lead to 19 points by the end of the quarter. Despite the deficit, the Mavericks showed improvement by winning the quarter by three points. Nonetheless, entering the final quarter down by 21 points is a challenging position from which few teams can make a comeback.

The Dallas Mavericks’ overall shooting percentage decreased to 45% by the end of the third quarter, while the Celtics’ shooting percentage also dropped to 44% from the field. The Celtics continued to outrebound the Mavericks, leading 41 to 28 by the end of the quarter.

Boston Celtics Close Out The Fourth Quarter To Lift 18th NBA Title

The Dallas Mavericks attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter. However, the Celtics’ lead and strong defense created too much of an uphill battle for the Mavericks. The Celtics maintained a 20-point lead with only 4:00 minutes left in the quarter.

Over four Celtics players finished with 14 or more points. The dynamic duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum each scored over 20 points. Both Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic struggled offensively in the first half. They managed to score more in the second half, but it was not enough to mount a comeback.

With 2:15 minutes left, Kyrie Irving began congratulating former Boston Celtics players, signaling that the game was over. It was clear there wasn’t enough time for a comeback, and the Boston Celtics secured their 18th championship. The game ended with a score of 106 to 86.
