One of the most successful Pakistani coaches in recent years, Morne Morkel, is now joining the Team India support staff under Gautam Gambhir’s leadership. Confirming the ongoing rumors, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has kept the cricket-loving people standing on their toes. Morkel will take up the role of men’s team bowling coach with the Indian side from September 1, a new bond that kickstarts a new beginning for both him and the Indian team.

The name that throngs into the minds of cricket lovers and patrons in one voice is that of Morne Morkel, recognized for his formidable bowling ability. At 39, he comes with a baggage of experience onto the Indian team’s side. His journey saw him playing for South Africa, after which he hopped to coaching roles. His appointment has infused fresh energy and expertise into the Indian bowling unit.
Before his new role with India, Morkel was roped in as the bowling coach for Pakistan during last year’s ODI World Cup. His term promised a lot but he ended up quitting the job before his contract could last. Reportedly, he quit the job due to personal reasons. The upcoming opportunity with India will give Morkel another opportunity to prove his credentials and experience.
Morkel has been appointed under the tutelage of highly accomplished coach Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir hired Morkel when he was the coach of Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. It was a great relationship, and the mutual respect boosted his chances of being appointed to work with the Indian team.
While he was first supposed to be part of the Indian team during their recent tour of Sri Lanka, he had to sit out owing to some personal reasons that cropped up at the last moment. It was at that time that Sairaj Bahutule took over as the interim bowling coach and guided them through six white-ball matches. Now, Morkel is all set to take over the reins for the upcoming series.

That will be the date when Morkel makes his debut for India while playing in the home series against Bangladesh, starting with the Chennai Test. The series is going to be a challenge in its own class, and his experience is bound to come in extremely handy in deciding the team’s bowling strategy. Their professional relationship became clearer when Gambhir recommended Morne Morkel’s appointment. Working alongside each other at LSG, one can only say that there has been effective teamwork and respect for each other. The former is even proof of their successful collaborations in the past.

Gambhir’s coaching team at present is a balanced one. Along with him are assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate. T. Dilip, who was the fielding coach under Rahul Dravid, continues in the post, thereby bringing continuity to the fielding department. This diverse coaching team is set to provide comprehensive support to the Indian squad.
