Moin Khan Urges Tendulkar and Ganguly to Keep Politics Out of Cricket

The debate hovers around the 2025 Champions Trophy, scheduled to be played in Pakistan. Veteran Pakistani wicketkeeper Moin Khan urges Indian legends to take a stand. He called out the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. His simple demand is to keep politics away from cricket.  The BCCI seems to speculate not to send the team to Pakistan but rather to contemplate a hybrid model and play a few games at a neutral venue. Well, it is not the first time such fears have cropped up. It had to share the Asia Cup with Sri Lanka last year for the same reasons.

India and Pakistan have a very old animosity on the cricket field. The last bilateral series between these two nations was in early 2013. They only played against each other at ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup since then. Cricket fans are tired of waiting for the matches between two cricketing giants. The uncertain end is frustrating for most.

There have been a lot of ups and downs in international cricket of Moin Khan, who feels that it is the right time for legends like Tendulkar and Ganguly to act. He has asked them to come forward and counsel the BCCI to distance cricket from politics. Cricket icons have always played an influential role in the governance of the sport. Tendulkar and Ganguly being icons of Indian cricket command significant influence. Their intervention could quite likely push BCCI towards more sporting decision-making rather than political considerations.

View from Pakistan

On the other hand, the PCB has already proposed a preliminary schedule for the Champions Trophy to India, which schedules India’s matches to be held in Lahore, including the semi-final and final. The much-awaited game between India and Pakistan is to take place on March 1. If India decides to pull out, it might cause damage to the whole structure of the tournament.

Moin Khan has also hinted that if India fails to live up to their promise, then the setbacks may prove expensive in the long run. If India does not come, then Pakistan should reconsider its decision to participate in any future events slated to be held in India. This sums up the ‘frustration with the way political matters are affecting cricket.

What stands out as the debate goes on is that cricket should stay away from political wranglings. Cricketing icons such as Tendulkar and Ganguly being present would make a world of a difference in ensuring that the sport gets back on track with what matters—the game itself. For now, fans will be glued to the screens to see whether BCCI and the ICC can ride this turbulent wave and bring back the thrill of India vs Pakistan on the cricketing field.
