Mohammed Shami, blazing with his star performance throughout their ODI Cup 2023, has been grappling with an ankle injury; he underwent surgery related to his Achilles Tendon earlier this year. His absence due to injuries in previous contests has brought home the point for prudent planning and preparations to include him effectively with such top bowlers as Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
Mhambrey feels the need to clearly define a role for Shami in the team structure, whether as a workhorse type of bowler or one that was built to get vital wickets. This vast experience, underlined by 229 wickets from 64 Tests, makes him a veteran whose value cannot be gauged by mere statistics.

Keeping in mind the diversity that was required at different fitness levels and roles, Mhambrey said that Shami’s workload and assignments needed to be planned, keeping in view his expertise. As much as he was building up Shami to the best of his capabilities, he was also working on developing new talent in India’s bowling repertoire.
Considering the tough series with Bangladesh and New Zealand coming up ahead of the Australian tour, for which Shami did not play, his presence in these games assumes massive importance for getting form and readiness in order. His integration back into full fitness and match readiness assumes priority for team management. With new talent coming up in India’s bowling firmament, how Shami is used becomes all the more important. Mhambrey feels that balanced use has to do with his experience and the newer pacers coming up in the ranks.
