MLS Matchday 25: FC Cincinnati Leads Eastern Conference

Soccer

MLS soccer is speeding towards a few critical events on the calendar following the conclusion of MLS Matchday 25 (and MLS Matchday 26). Key Major League Soccer stars, such as Leo Messi, are still on international duty leaving coaches with difficult roster decisions in the starting IX.

There are only a few dates of fixtures before the MLS All-Star Game occurs on July 19.  Following the superstar-filled scrimmage, the Leagues Cup will begin two days later on July 21.  The secondary transfer window opens right before the All-Star game on July 18th and will run through August 18. Any trades that are completed between MLS clubs are required to take place in the official Primary or Secondary transfer windows.

But before we get to all of that, Major League Soccer clubs took the pitch once again for MLS Matchday 25.

FC Cincinnati Takes Over Supporter’s Shield Position

With international stars still at Copa America 2024, the FC Cincinnati 6-1 win over Inter Miami loses a little bit of its wow factor. That being said, six goals in an MLS match is nothing to scoff at for the four different Cincy players who found the back of the net.

Reigning Landon Donovan MLS MVP award winner, Luciano Acosta was as essential as ever powering FC Cincinnati to the top of the standings. With his 10th goal of the year, Acosta becomes the fourth MLS player in history with 10 goals and 10 assists in four different seasons.

Portland Stuns Nashville in the First Half during MLS Matchday 25

The Portland Timbers were at the bottom of the tree stump staring a long way up at ninth in the Western Conference Table entering the weekend. A four-goal surge over ten minutes in the first half was enough to earn Portland a 4-1 win over Nashville SC during MLS Matchday 25. This is only the sixth time a team has scored four goals in the first 29 minutes of a match.

Timbers forward Jonathan Rodriguez earned a place on the Team of the Matchday 25 following his two goals and one assist performance in the win. Teammate Santiago Moreno was also added to a bench position on the Team of Matchday.

The critical win pushes Portland into the 5th spot with 33 points in a wild West headlined by a three-way tie at the top between LA FC, Real Salt Lake, and LA Galaxy (43 points).  The loss for Nashville SC leaves them in eighth position at 6-8-8 in the Eastern Conference. Toronto, Atlanta United, and Montreal are all within striking distance in the table.

Orlando City’s Rout Moves Them Ahead of Nashville in East

Orlando City SC dominated D.C. United 5-0 during MLS Matchday 25 action. Orlando City scored three times in the first half. Facundo Torres put the game away with his goal in the 70th minute to make the score 4-0.  The 29th goal for Torres in the Purple jerseys of Orlando City moved him past Nani for the second most in history for the decade-old soccer club.

The victory improves Orlando’s season to seven wins, nine losses and six draws placing them 7th in the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately for D.C. United faithful, the club finds itself at the bottom of the Eastern conference table is a 4-11L-8D record. Despite the four wins, D.C. United only trails 9th-place Toronto by four points in the race for a playoff opportunity.
