The Minnesota Vikings appear to be experiencing bad luck as the 2024 NFL preseason moves forward. After injury news was released about their new rookie Quarterback J.J. McCarthy, things got even worse for Minnesota as they carried on a joint practice with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday afternoon.
During practice, Vikings Wideout Jordan Addison was carted off the field after making a leaping catch near the sidelines. How will the team be able to recover from a rough day on the injury front?

The good news for the Minnesota Vikings is that the apparent leg injury is not as serious as it appeared to be during live practice. The Vikings need veteran leadership at the wide receiver position heading into the upcoming season. Jordan Addison is coming into his second year with the Minnesota Vikings.
Addison caught 70 passes for 911 yards in his rookie campaign in 2023. He reached the end zone a total of 10 times alongside Vikings top receiver, Justin Jefferson. Despite injuries and struggles a year ago, Jefferson went over 1,000 yards receiving, but it came with low-scoring numbers tallying only five touchdowns on 68 pass receptions.
Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Kevin O’Connell told the media after their joint practice with the Cleveland Browns that the second-year wide receiver has an ankle injury and will not practice on Thursday. Amongst the recent injury diagnosis, Jordan Addison is still facing a court appearance following a DUI charge on July 31, just two weeks ago.
Minnesota Vikings Injury Woes
The biggest disappointment for Vikings fans to start the 2024 season is prior news that the team received this morning about their rookie quarterback, JJ McCarthy. He was selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft as the 10th pick. Unfortunately, McCarthy will miss his entire first year with a torn meniscus.
Doctors evaluated the rookie quarterback on Tuesday to take a look at possible damage to his right knee. This is not what Minnesota Vikings fans wanted to hear as McCarthy was listed to be the possible starting quarterback before being ruled out. JJ McCarthy was able to get a chance to showcase his talent in the Vikings’ first preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders last Saturday.
Fans were able to witness some bright spots as McCarthy went 11-17 for 188 yards and threw two touchdown passes and one interception. Now, the rookie quarterback will use this time to recover and prepare for next season after having his meniscus repaired on Wednesday afternoon. It is devastating to hear that the young Vikings star will not see the field in 2024.
Final Thoughts
Minnesota still has a shot in the NFC North. If Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson can stay healthy, the sky is the limit for the Vikings receiving core. Sam Darnold is listed as the starting quarterback to begin the 2024 season since McCarthy will not be able to suit up. Darnold does have years of experience under his belt. He will be playing in his seventh season on yet another team after splitting time with the Jets, Panthers, and recently the San Francisco 49ers in 2023.
However, the Minnesota Vikings will have to be at their best with the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, and Green Bay Packers also chasing a playoff spot and Super Bowl bid as rivals in the NFC North.
