The Minnesota Timberwolves look to keep ahold of their lead in the Western Conference. But today they aim to defend home court against the Brooklyn Nets. Although the home team are favorites, teams can have an off night at any point during the regular season.
Especially when the full cast isn’t available, a lot depends on role players stepping up when seeing extended minutes. Additionally, opposing starters hope to take advantage of the newer lineups. Especially early, keeping an eye out and monitoring how teams attack the newer matchups is essential.
But do you see someone unexpectedly stepping up today?
Minnesota Timberwolves Injury News
Rudy Gobert is ruled out for tonight’s matchup. Jon Krawczynski from the Athletic reports that his ankle is keeping him from playing tonight. Moreover, this team keeps most of the rest of their rotation intact. Especially because they have two nights off after tonight, they should be more than fine moving forward.
I think this is my favorite highlight from last night. Beautiful execution all around with the ball movement, spacing, and the monster finish from Gobert. This is the Minnesota Timberwolves experience. pic.twitter.com/pZHPTUBNYR

But the Brooklyn Nets have been building for the future and are hoping to finish their season strong. While Minnesota should win, this injury could open the door just enough for the visitors to keep things interesting. Fans will notice Gobert’s absence for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Minnesota Timberwolves Impact Of Gobert
The Frenchman excels through his defensive presence. He blocks and alters a lot of opposing shots. As a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, he still affects the game at the rim at a high level. Although many criticized his contract when he came here from the Utah Jazz, he’s lived up to the billing more as of late.

He averages 13.7 points per game. It’s known that he looks for lobs or offensive rebounding opportunities to get his points. but at 12.7 rebounds a game, he’s a force to be reckoned with. He can hold his own on the perimeter. But he excels in the paint and defending the rim. Especially when a pick takes away someone like Anthony Edwards, the opposing player is often greeted by a roaming Gobert.
As a defensive center-piece, the Minnesota Timberwolves will miss his presence. But this team is still hoping to take care of business and not let a letdown performance get in the way of a home victory.
Minnesota Timberwolves To Step Up
Meanwhile, this provides an opportunity for others. However, the Nets hope to challenge the number one-ranked defense in the league today without Gobert. Regardless, players know they need to fill the void. It’s their turn to pick up the defensive slack.
Karl-Anthony Towns expects to see added time at the center position. Consequently, Naz Reid and Kyle Anderson will see an increased role tonight for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Reid is a true center. Therefore, it makes sense to see him in an increased role tonight. At 12.2 points per game, the offense will not suffer, Instead, his focus will be on limiting second chances for the Nets.
Additionally, Anderson is one of the more versatile players. With Towns shifting to the 5 position, the former UCLA product will likely see more frontcourt minutes on the court. Regardless of who steps up for the Minnesota Timberwolves, this a a good chance to see who can fill the void in case unforeseen injuries happen down the road.
