Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin knows facing a red-hot Washington Commanders team in Week 10 at Northwest Stadium will take some work. Washington is 7-2, and currently undefeated at home. Their 18-15 miracle win over the Chicago Bears in Week 8 is the closest anyone has come to breaking that streak. Now it’s the Steelers’ turn. The Steelers enter Week 10 6-2, with a 3-1 record for away games.
Tomlin knows his team, which has had its share of ups and downs at the quarterback spot (the irony…) is standing in front of the history-making rookie Washington Commanders Quarterback Jayden Daniels. If they don’t get control early, the game will get away from them.
The Washington Commanders Have Tomlin’s Attention
Under Daniels, Washington‘s name has become known as one of the more unique offenses in the league. The Associated Press reported earlier this week The Washington Commanders are one of just five NFL teams with more runs than passes, they lead the league with 15 rushing touchdowns and rank second with 1,475 yards. “No matter what tape you put on on third down, in the red zone, his mobility is a big factor, whether it’s on purpose or on an improvised play. It’s something we need to be aware of as a team. (Jayden) Daniels is one of the main components of why they’re a dangerous group,” Tomlin said Wednesday.
Tomlin’s wisdom pays dividends. Tomlin is 25-6 against rookie quarterbacks and won the past seven games coming out of the bye week, NBC Sports reports. This is the reason why he’s watched Daniels very closely. Against the New York Giants, Daniels completed 15 of 22 passes for 209 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also rushed for 35 yards.
“They [the Washington Commanders]lead the NFL in rushing touchdowns,” Tomlin said to media Tuesday via Steelerswire. “His [Jayden Daniels’] quarterback mobility is a component of that. They’re eleven of eleven on fourth-down conversions.” He also mentioned how the team has only turned the ball over three times, which he called “a record of some description through nine games in the NFL.”
Commanders Hope Star Cornerback Will Be Ready Sunday
At the last moment of the trade deadline this week, the Washington Commanders acquired four-time Pro Bowl Cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints. In exchange, the Washington Commanders sent their 2025 third, fourth, and sixth round picks to the Saints, receiving Lattimore and a fifth round pick. The 28-year-old has dealt with a hamstring injury which caused him to miss the Saints’ Week 9 game against the Carolina Panthers. His status for Sunday’s game is currently uncertain.
When speaking with the Commanders’ media Wednesday, Lattimore discussed the injury but didn’t give a timeline for recovery. “I don’t know. That’s up to the trainers,” Lattimore said. “The injury just happened, so, you know, I don’t really know what’s going on as far as like timetable, getting back on the field, so it’s up to them.”
Washington Commanders Head Coach Dan Quinn didn’t talk about it either. NFL.com reported Wednesday that Quinn focused on Lattimore’s ability to compete and be a great addition to the team. “We’re going to absolutely and relentlessly compete at everything. That’s the chance to make our team better, make the group better, make you better,” Quinn explained. Like Adam and his group, myself and the coaches, we’re going to dig in hard to do that. What does Marshon mean? He’s a competitor.” Kickoff time is 1 p.m. EST on CBS.
