The Chicago White Sox got some terrible news ahead of the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline as veteran starting pitcher Mike Clevinger is going to miss the remainder of the season as he undergoes disc replacement surgery in his neck, according to Fansided’s Robert Murray. Clevinger was one of the names expected to be traded ahead of next week’s trade deadline but has not pitched in the majors since May 23. He made four starts this season and was 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.94 WHIP in 16.0 innings for the Chicago White Sox this season.
With the Chicago White Sox looking to trade away some salaries, Mike Clevinger’s name would have been at the top of the list as he signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the team during the offseason. It will be interesting to see what the Chicago White Sox do with Mike Clevinger heading into the 2025 season as he could be a possible player they bring back as a free agent, similar to what they did for this year.
Will the Chicago White Sox bring back Mike Clevinger for 2025?

The Chicago White Sox have not had too much luck with their starting pitching as they have been trying to flip veterans into getting more minor league prospects. Mike Clevinger missed all of the 2021 season with Tommy John surgery but did well in 2023 in his first year with the White Sox. He went 9-9 with a 3.77 ERA in 131.1 innings in 24 starts so he was able to do well enough to have this year’s contract make sense.
Mike Clevinger has shown the ability to pitch well but remember that he will be entering his age-34 season. There have been veteran pitchers who have been able to do well after dealing with injuries, like current Boston Red Sox starting pitcher James Paxton. The White Sox could use Clevinger as a veteran leader and if he is not able to pitch in 2024, which could be a possibility depending on the recovery process after surgery, they can bring him back on a two-year deal and let him rehab in the first year. Do not be surprised to see another contract with the White Sox during the offseason to build back up with a familiar team.
