The Michigan Wolverines football program has entered a new era. Coming off a national championship, they now have a new head coach and many new starters. New head coach Sherrone Moore has done a good job of keeping the program on the right track. While they have had players leave via the transfer portal, every program is dealing with this. On the recruiting trail, Moore has landed a huge recruit for the 2025 cycle, defensive lineman Nate Marshall.

This is a huge deal for Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines. The defense has been the bread and butter of the program over the last three years, and they now have another top-tier recruit on the defensive line. Nate Marshall is one of the top recruits in the state of Illinois for the 2025 cycle. A couple of the recruiting sites have him as the number one defensive end in the class.
This is hopefully the first of many for Sherrone Moore. Officially, this is the first recruit he has landed during his time as the head coach. However, he has been heavily involved in the recruiting process under Jim Harbaugh. One of the reasons many recruits did not leave was because they already had a relationship with Moore. The 2025 class is the real test for the new regime. How does it stack up so far?
Michigan 2025 Class So Far
Nate Marshall is the fourth commitment for the Michigan Wolverines in the 2020 class. He joins four-star defensive lineman Bobby Kanka, four-star quarterback Carter Smith, and three-star tight end Eli Owens. While they do not have many commitments, the quality of players is there. The Wolverines have never had a top recruiting class. They always seem to be able to coach up talent well.
Currently, they have the 17th-ranked class, according to On3, and the fifth-ranked class in the Big Ten. Obviously, it is early. The Michigan Wolverines will get many other commitments between now and when those players make it to campus. Players could flip or request a release from the National Letter of Intent. However, a good start is never a bad thing.
How Does The Transfer Portal Affect This?
In the new college football landscape, it will be interesting to see how much these rankings matter. A player could go to a program for a year and then transfer. Programs can have a bad class but fill holes via the transfer portal. Getting the top-tier players is important, but it feels less important in the modern era.
The Michigan Wolverines are in the best position of any team. They won the national championship and have zero expectations with a brand-new team and head coach. Still, this team has talent and, with the expanded College Football Playoff, could be competing for a title again in 2024.
