Michigan Wolverines Hire Former Charlotte 49ers Head Coach

Michigan Wolverines hire Biff Poggi

The Michigan Wolverines ended last season on a high note. After struggling for most of the season, head coach Sherrone Moore took his team into Columbus and took down Ohio State for the fourth straight year. They followed it up with a bowl game victory over Jalen Milroe and the Alabama Crimson Tide. The excitement continued in the offseason. Number one overall recruit Bryce Underwood flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan. Moore made another big move, hiring former Charlotte 49ers head coach Biff Poggi to his staff.

Michigan Wolverines Hire Biff Poggi

Fans of the Michigan Wolverines may recognize Biff Poggi. He was part of Jim Harbaugh’s staff and a key member of the culture turnaround that resulted in a national championship. Many saw him as Harbaugh’s “right-hand man” and was one of the few who could argue with him. In 2022, Harbaugh talked with Bruce Feldman of The Athletic and had nothing but good things to say about Poggi.

“Biff’s a great mentor and has been that for me. He likes to scheme it up, and he knows how to coach and helps coach the coaches. … As far as helping me personally, there’s not too many decisions that I make that I don’t run by Biff and we talk it out.”

After leaving Ann Arbor, he coached Charlotte to a 3-9 victory in his first season. The next year, he went 5-7 and was fired by the school. Poggi hung around last year’s team, being on the sidelines for the walloping of Northwestern on Senior Day. He posted about being back on social media and had nothing but good things to say.

“Great being “ back home” at Michigan. The players, coaches, staff, administration and fans were so welcoming. It feels great to have a football home. It all started years ago with my son Henry Poggi’s career as a player and my great friend Jim Harbaugh. Special people and place.”

2025 Outlook

The Michigan Wolverines head into the 2025 season with high expectations. Last season, they had nothing at the quarterback position. This year, the Wolverines will likely start the number one overall recruit from this year’s class. Their schedule doesn’t have many of the powerhouse teams in the Big Ten, like Oregon, but there are some tough road games throughout the year. Michigan has to travel to play Oklahoma, Nebraska, USC, and Michigan State. They do get the Buckeyes at home this year in the Big House as they look to make it five straight over their hated rivals.

Moore has carefully crafted his staff to improve the program. Offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell was let go after one year in the position. Wink Martindale was retained as the defensive coordinator, and other lower positions have been filled with quality assistants. Biff Poggi is a veteran coach who is great to have as an advisor. He has a track record of success and knows the program well. The Michigan Wolverines kick off the season on August 30th against the New Mexico Lobos, giving us the first look at the new team.
