Michigan Wolverines Hoping Alex Orji Can Jumpstart Anemic Offense

Michigan Wolverines Sherrone Moore talks Alex Orji

The Michigan Wolverines head into Saturday’s matchup with something to prove. They have looked shaky on offense through the first three games, and the quarterback’s play is a big reason for this. Davis Warren won the job in training camp, but after his performance against Arkansas State, head coach Sherrone Moore decided to make a change. Alex Orji will now take the reigns of the offense. The team hopes he can be the catalyst for more offense against USC.

While the Michigan Wolverines offense hasn’t been great, their run game has shown signs of life. Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards have been a great backfield tandem. Sherrone Moore hopes Alex Orji can make the rushing attack even more dangerous. He is one of the most athletic players on the team. Offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell has a full arsenal of plays he can call. The Wolverines can keep opposing defenses guessing between RPOs, zone reads, and whatever other creative plays are lurking in the playbook.

The question surrounding Orji is whether he can make the big throws necessary to win big games. If USC decides to stack the box and take away the run, the Michigan Wolverines quarterback will need to hit open receivers for chunk gains. The coaching staff decided that was worth the risk. Ultimately, something had to be done. If the team plays like they did last week, the Trojans will run them out of the building. That can’t happen, as this is a game the Wolverines need badly.

Early Season Must Win

The blowout loss against Texas puts pressure on this game. If the Michigan Wolverines fall to 2-2, with both losses being against ranked teams, their case for the College Football Playoff becomes weak. However, if the team can beat the Trojans and string together some wins, the committee might look at the early-season loss as the growing pains of a new team with a new coach. It helps that the Wolverines get to do all of this at home. The Big House is one of the toughest places to play. Bringing in the newcomers to the conference will hopefully give them the upper hand.

Ultimately, there is very little pressure for the Michigan Wolverines this season. While no one wants to see the team fall flat, last year’s team was full of NFL prospects. This year, they are dealing with a younger team and are inexperienced at quarterback. Still, the program is eager to prove the last two years were not a fluke. They want to show this program is here to stay in a loaded Big Ten conference. Saturday is a huge matchup in Sherrone Moore’s early career.
