Michael Vaughan Harsh Criticism On Virat & Co for ICC Failures

Michael Vaughan says Playing in the IPL would have been more exceptional than playing against Pakistan

Earlier, England captain Michael Vaughan very viciously told Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja that the Indian cricket team should have claimed more ICC championships during their prime time.

These three legends have retired from T20 international cricket recently, and they have been the mainstay of Indian cricket for a long time but could clinch only one ICC title in the last decade, and that was the 2024 T20 World Cup title.

Looking at three Indian players, namely Kohli, Sharma, and Jadeja, Michael Vaughan hinted at India’s poor performance in terms of claiming the white-ball championship during their time. However, for such key players in the team for so many years, their ICC trophy has not been impressive, and the recent T20 World Cup is the only trophy.

Three set-sellers bid adieu to encourage the next generation after providing the Indians with their second T20 World Cup crown. Of the three players, it was Kohli who was the first to announce his retirement from T20Is, announcing the match when he was receiving his Player of the Match trophy after he had smashed 76 off 59 balls.

Rohit Sharma also followed the tradition in the post-match press conference when he said he would also be retiring from international cricket. Sharma and Kohli bid adieu to T20I cricket as they are the leading run-getters in the shortest format of the game with 4,231 runs and 4,188, respectively.

The next day, Ravindra Jadeja also bid adieu to T20Is, and thus a chapter of Indian cricket came to an end.

Michael Vaughan’s Critique and Praise

Michael Vaughan, renowned for his candid cricketing analysis, recently delivered a pointed critique of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja’s careers in light of India’s recent ICC achievements. Following India’s triumph in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Vaughan expressed a nuanced disappointment, suggesting that despite their brilliance and contributions to the team, the trio should have amassed more white-ball titles collectively.

In his comments on the Club Prairie Fire digital Podcast, Vaughan featured the gap between Rohit Sharma’s two T20 World Cup triumphs, traversing seventeen years. This slip-by, as per Vaughan, mirrors a botched opportunity for the Indian team under the initiative and ability of players like Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja.

Michael Vaughan recognized the meaning of their new triumph yet underscored the potential for better progress in past ICC competitions.

The Right Time to Retire

Michael Vaughan criticized the decision of the trio, but at the same time, he could not deny the fact that the trio had retired from T20Is at the right time. He said they could now aim at Test cricket, one-day internationals, and the IPL like Dhoni has done with his career. Former England Captain Michael Vaughan said:

What a way is this to bow out with a victory in Barbados and with a trophy in your hand? They can now play Test cricket, a little of one-day cricket, and in the IPL, as MS Dhoni plays, they can play forever.

For the future generation of cricket lovers in India, Kohli, Sharma, and Jadeja are going to remain prominent icons while new talents follow in their footsteps. It was after 13 years that the Indian team managed to lift an ICC trophy. Meanwhile, the responsibility now is on the young blood to carry the legacy forward. There is immense talent in the Indian cricketing circle to stay on top in every format of the game.
