Michael Chandler does not blame ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor for the withdrawal from the fight scheduled for UFC 303 in June. But now he has confirmed that he will face Charles Oliveira in a five-round battle in a co-main event fight of the UFC 309 in November. However, he could have done a lot of things at this time. Chandler clearly understood how people would start saying he wasted the last two years of his career as soon as that fight was announced.
However, Chandler had long heard this criticism from other fighters even before the fight against Oliveira was scheduled to be made as many of them publicly attacked him for sitting idle waiting for the successful businessman who doesn’t care about the fight business anymore and is on his way to earn millions and billions of dollars.
Possibilities for Michael Chandler
Each fight has its pros and cons, but in the case of Chandler this fight could either again give him the opportunity for the title or if he loses or even worse if it becomes a knockout against Chandler that will be the last shot he would get to meet McGregor once he returns. Chandler is fully aware of this and yet he feels that things will turn out the way he wants them to be.
Michael Chandler talked more about his opportunity against Conor McGregor with Damon Martin on MMA Fighting. “It’s really funny. You’ve had a thousand fighters sit here across from you and talk to you doing interviews and all of them who have said that I was Conor’s little whipping boy or I was waiting too long or I was wasting my career, every single one of them would have held onto this Conor fight even if they say publicly that they wouldn’t. Every single one of those guys wants this fight.”
Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler
Overall if we analyze the situation of ‘The Notorious‘ and Michael Chandler, it’s easy to understand that the only way that Chandler would get big fights in his upcoming career is if he defeats Charles Oliveira and he’ll get more options for the future. He may fight McGregor when he steps in the octagon again in early 2025 or he may have to wait to fight for a title against UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev. Chandler is preparing for the victory in November and sure in his choices, He knows 2025 will be busy.
However, Chandler was asked about McGregor’s Career and he said this in reply. “I do think that he’ll return. Maybe I’ve just been so close to it and so focused on it that you just look at his history, Conor McGregor is nothing, nobody without the sport of mixed martial arts. Without the UFC platform. Without the legacy that he has created.”
