Report: Miami Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa Will Not Retire After Suffering Another Concussion

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been a topic of conversation in NFL circles this weekend. After suffering another scary concussion during Thursday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills, many have called on the former top pick to hang it up. Research has shown that repeated concussions can lead to scary long-term health effects. However, it doesn’t seem like the quarterback will be hanging up his cleats anytime soon. A report on Sunday indicated he will attempt to return to the field.

Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Sunday morning Tua Tagovailoa has no plans to retire. There isn’t a timeline for the return of the Miami Dolphins quarterback. He will likely have to pass the concussion protocols and be cleared by specialists. Head coach Mike McDaniel spoke to the media about the injury after the game.

“First and foremost, I’m not assessing the injury through the lens of, ‘Alright, so what does this mean for him playing?’ Really, for me, I know the facts are that it’s important that he gets healthy day by day, and in that, the best thing I can do is not try to assess what this even means from a football standpoint.”

Once he is healthy, there will be questions about whether the Miami Dolphins should play him. Many fans have called on the team to refuse to let him come back. It isn’t just that he has gotten concussions; it is the severity of them. After he went down in the third quarter, it was clear he was immediately done for the night. His arms clenched up, indicating a loss of consciousness. The 26-year-old still wants to play, but we will have a conversation for the next few weeks.

Concussion History

Tua Tagovailoa has been dealing with concussions since 2022. He missed five games that season because of head injuries. Two of those concussions were in a four-day period. Last year, he was able to stay healthy for the entire season and led the league in passing yards. Concussions have been a huge topic of conversation in the NFL over the past decade. The league is trying to mitigate head injuries in any way they can. How they handle this situation may be a defining moment.

What will the Miami Dolphins do? This team has a loaded roster and wants to compete for a Super Bowl. If Tua Tagovailoa misses extended time, they will have to rely on their glut of talent to step up. For Tagovailoa, he has a big decision to make, but the early reports indicate we will see him on the field again.
