Miami Dolphins Survive Ugly 15-10 Win vs. Patriots

Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins season subverted expectations when Tua Tagovailoa went down with a concussion in week 2 against the Bills. Since his assignment to the injured reserve, the Dolphins struggled to find any production on offense, despite consistent effort on other sides of the ball. Entering their division rival New England Patriots home with a 1-3 record, South Beach needed a big win to stay alive in the AFC East.

Miami Dolphins Early Season Struggles

The Miami Dolphins’ 2024 season has been marred by inconsistency, beginning with Tua Tagovailoa’s concussion in a valiant Week 2 effort against the Buffalo Bills. Since then, Miami’s struggles have been glaring, including a dispiriting Week 4 loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans. With only one victory this season, a dramatic walk-off field goal win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Dolphins found themselves desperately searching for answers.

What’s even more concerning is that through four weeks, Miami had yet to hold an offensive lead at any point in a game, underscoring their inability to establish control early. After three straight losses, the Dolphins were facing mounting pressure to secure a win and shift the momentum of their season. Without it, their playoff hopes would have taken a serious hit, making their recent win against the Patriots not only critical but potentially season-saving.

Miami Dolphins Pull Together Team Win Amid Adversity

The Miami Dolphins secured a gritty 15-10 victory over the New England Patriots, overcoming both their miscues and capitalizing on the Patriots’ mistakes. Despite trailing early, Miami took advantage of New England’s uncharacteristic 12 penalties, the most the Patriots had committed all season. Jason Sanders’ late field goal helped seal the Dolphins’ second win of the year, bringing their record to 2-3.

The closing minutes were filled with drama as the Patriots thought they had reclaimed the lead on a Jacoby Brissett touchdown pass to Ja’Lynn Polk. However, the score was overturned after the replay showed Polk’s heel landed out of bounds after a toe drag.

“If any part of the foot hits out of bounds during the normal continuous motion of taking a step (heel-toe or toe-heel), then the foot is out of bounds,” the NFL rulebook explains. “A player is inbounds if he drags his foot, or if there is a delay between the heel-toe or toe-heel touching the ground.”

Miami’s defense then came up with a critical stop, forcing New England to punt with under a minute to play, securing the Dolphins’ victory.

Miami’s struggles on special teams nearly cost them the game, including a botched field goal snap and a blocked punt. Despite these setbacks, the Dolphins managed to stay in control, even as injuries to key players like De’Von Achane and Jevon Holland added to their difficulties. The win may have come in ugly fashion, but it provided a crucial boost for a Dolphins team looking to turn its season around.

Miami Dolphins Focus Ahead

The Miami Dolphins hope to see the return of their starting QB, Tua Tagovailoa, for their week 8 game against the Arizona Cardinals. They enter their Week 6 bye week 2-3, only one game behind division rival Buffalo Bills.
