Along with announcing his retirement, this could spell disaster for the Dolphins defense before the NFL season.

Miami is dealing with lots of roster issues and this retirement could harm them even more. Despite the signing of veterans, Miami’s linebacker core is a complete mess this season. The Dolphins are also losing a defensive piece that could help out the younger players in the future.

In the first week of NFL training camp, Shaq Barrett posted on Instagram that he is retiring from the league. This is coming after signing a one-year deal with the Dolphins after five years with Tampa Bay. There is a shock coming from the league about this retirement and the details surrounding it.

This Miami Dolphins star retirement could cause a lot of backlash for the roster on defense. With Dolphins linebackers, Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips still out before the season, it hurts their linebacker unit. Even after drafting Chop Robinson, having a veteran to help the younger players on the team, could harm the chemistry.

Miami Dolphins Star Statistics

Shaquil Barrett was one of the emerging linebackers with Von Miller on the Super Bowl-winning Broncos in 2015. While he had decent numbers in Denver it pales in comparison to his time in Tampa Bay. During his five-year run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Barrett accumulated 45.0 sacks, 15 force fumbles, and 48 tackles for losses. It was a great run that won the Bucs a Super Bowl against the Chiefs.

The retirement of the Miami Dolphins star could harm the team, but he is leaving a great legacy. Shaq Barrett’s time with the Buccaneers was legendary for fans and could inspire others. Miami on the other hand lost another linebacker for their battered defense. 2024 could be a long year for the Dolphins if things go wrong immediately.
